30 years of Ukrainian Independence! Слава Україні! Героям слава!

We've been so caught up with the Afghanistan debacle and the Canadian election (a choice between Liberal and liberal and ultra-liberal) that we nearly missed Ukrainian Independence Day, celebrated yesterday (August 24th) by Ukrainians and "honorary Ukrainians" around the world. 

Fortunately, Agent 5 reminded us that this was the 30th Anniversary of Ukrainian independance. In the video (running time 3 hours!) you will see the massive parade and ceremonies that took place in Kiev.

Якщо Ви це читаєте рідною, матірною нашою мовою, то розуміємося відносно значення святкування цього дня.

Пишу і одночасно дивлюся на наживу передачу урочистостей цього ранку в Київі.

Слів у мене бракує гідно висловити почуття мого серця - Хто би повірив, як ми виростали на колінах наших батьків, сиділи за столами наших суботних рідних шкіл, як рік за роком, 22-го січня брали участь в річних вивішеннях українського прапору на ратушах наших містах і селах, хто би повірив що дечекаємося такого свята!

Коби наші тати і мами дожили дивуватися, радіти цим днем… Але знайте, що це і таки вони святкують у нас, дітей їх, що задля старання їх вміємо це читати нашою мастірною мовою і можемо розуміти нашим українським серцем…. 

Радіймо, брати, сестри нашої парафії, що передали нам наші українські родичі, І молім Бога за дальші такі чуда в нашім миролюбнім, Христолюбнім житті! 

Father Roman is the father of Larissa Galadza-Cronyn, Canada's ambassador to the Ukraine. Canada was the first Western country to recognize Ukrainian independence in 1991, and is home to the largest Ukrainian diaspora in the world (as a percentage of the total popularion, at least).
