VIDEOS: "Undercover in Havana" and "An island in turmoil"

Our post "Beginning of the end for Castro Communist Cuba?" (WWW 10/2/26) brought more reaction than usual, not all of it positive. Agent 2, who used to be a regular visitor to Cuba and has friends there, thinks it wrong of Agent 10 to advocate a boycott of Cuba as a tourist destination. 2 writes:

I understand that she wants change in Cuba.... She is telling people not to go and support a dictatorship. But what is happening right now is extremely hurtful to the residents. No tourists mean some resorts are closing, no jobs for the workers, no transportation because of the fuel. 

How are they to shop, go to doctors or hospitals, visit friends or sick relatives? Only some of them have decent bicycles. The tourists give tips, clothes, medicines not only to the workers but they walk off the resorts to the villages to distribute money and meds and clothes.

Lack of fuel for the tourists to take a cab and guess what, the cab driver has a family. Schools are closed and for how long?... I am on WhatsApp constantly with my Cuban friends who are hurting. They are living with this mess. 

The next few months will be very difficult for them. The big solution here is which country will bring their tankers not overthrowing the government. That is for another time.

In this video, Ezra Levant interviews Alexa Lavoie, who he sent to Havana on a mission to document how things are on the ground. Ms Lavoie describes poverty, shortages and surveillance seen in Havana and how its reality clashes with Cuba's tourist image.

She reports many of the same things Agent 2 said, especially the part about jobs at hotels and resorts being the best jobs. As you'll see, things are not so good if you're a teacher or... just about anything else. Watch the video and decide for yourself whether it's right for the US of A to be trying to depose the Castro Communists. 

And here's another one, an ARTE documentary published last October. Like the first video, it shows how, for foreign tourists, Cuba is a corner of paradise in the heart of the Caribbean. But for Cubans life is not easy. A rolling economic crisis means food shortages and poverty as buildings and infrastructure crumble. How can we fail to understand how much the poor people of Cuba -- that includes everyone except the Castro cronies and their military -- want change and wants it now!

VIDEO: Shiny Pony doesn't matter any more

If you pay attention to the entertainment news (as opposed to real news), you may have noticed that Blackie McBlackface, former Prime Minister of All Canuckistan, was invited to deliver a speech on "soft power" at last week's New World Order gabfest in Davos. He either was accompanied by or (more likely) accompanied Katy Perry, who apparently is a celebrity -- something that Shiny Pony is no longer.

Unlike the speeches given by President Trump and Canuck PM Marx Carnage, video and transcripts of Junior's speech are less than prominent in the meeja. The reason could be that he did nothing other than repeat the usual liberal platitudes. [At least he didn't lead a chorus of "Kumbaya"! Ed.] Or it could be that no-one bothered to record whatever he said. Here's why.

Be that as it may, Walt's Canadian readers have some questions.

Who invited Trudeau fils to Davos... and why? After all, he's no longer emperor, prime minister or even governor of the Great No-longer-white North. If he wasn't on the arm of Katy Perry, he'd be nobody!

Who paid for his trip? Did he get to fly in the Canadian Air Force Cessna with Mr Carnage? Did the WEF gang put him up in a VIP suite? And again... why?

And finally, how does Katy Perry feel about "soft power"? Most women prefer... errr... something a little bit harder... don't they?

VIDEO: Are Canadians racists? Rex Murphy says not... and immediately gets branded a racist! Ezra Levant explains

Last Monday, our old friend Rex Murphy wrote "Canada is not a racist country, despite what the Liberals say", a great column in the National Post in which he decries the "racism industry" which has been at peak productivity this week in Canada as well as the USA.

Can you imagine the outrage which spewed forth from Canada's liberal elites? How dare a 73-year-old white man who was born in Canada -- well, in Newfoundland, actually -- of European descent, express his opinion on this very fraught subject. His co-worker, Vanmala Subramaniam -- went so far as to say that Mr Murphy should not be allowed a platform from which to preach "hatred". The Rebel's Ezra Levant takes up the story.



Footnote: Ms Subramaniam is one of the 1000s of non-white immigrants welcomed by "racist Canada". Ms Subramaniam in not only non-white, she's also non-black. That doesn't matter, of course.

During the Christmas rush, things tend to pile up on our desks -- Ed.'s and mine -- to be seen later... or never... We were doing a bit of dusting and cleaning... the old D&C... today, while we got over Ma Nifkins' jellied gin -- and found a note of the URL for this video, posted by Ezra Levant on YouTube on December 17th.

A few days earlier, lawyers for Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of All Canuckistan (except Alberta and Saskatchewan) made a shocking decision -- one which must have been approved by Mr Socks hisself. They -- the ones that work for Elections Canada -- decided to investigate Mr Levant and Rebel News for publishing and promoting The Libranos: What the Media isn't telling you about Justin Trudeau's Corruption.

The book came out during last fall's election campaign, ya see, so obviously it was calculated to influence Canadians to vote Not Liberal. And that would be wrong! Right? Two other books, by John Ivison and Aaron Wherry and John Ivison, both paid indirectly by the Liberal government, also appeared during the campaign, but that's OK because both Mr Ivison and Mr Wherry are sweet and sweeter (respectively) on the King of Blackface. It's only Ezra Levant who has to STFU during elections.



For criticizing the Liberal government, in print, during the election period, Mr Levant faces a possible fine C$5000 ($3850 in real money). It's not a lot, and Mr Levant could save himself a lot of grief (not to mention many guineas in legal fees) by bending the knee to Elections Canada and admitting he was a bad boy. But what about free speech? How come Messrs Ivison and Wherry can publish books, but not Mr Levant? Doesn't everyone enjoy freedom of speech, or is that only for liberal/Liberal media typists? [Don't bother posting your answer in the comments section. We already know the answer. Ed.]

Canada's liberal propagandists to get $600 million reward

First the funny stuff. Today, on its Toronto page, CTV News has a story headed "Police issue arrest warrant for suspect in violent attack on teen girl and her mother". (The suspect's name is Harry -- originally Hari -- Rajkumar. Can you say "Diversity is our strength!", boys and girls?) Here's a screen grab of the suspect description.

Evidently CTV, like the rest of the Canuck meeja, can't afford proofreaders any more. That Canadian newspapers and even TV networks are struggling is not news. Even the state-run (and taxpayer-funded!) CBC is crying stinking fish, laying off "workers" (but not execs, of course) and begging for (a) subscriptions and (b) government handouts.

The gentlemen and ladies (and those who aren't sure) of the fifth estate got their wish for (b) on Thursday when the gliberal government of Prime Minister Just In Trudeau announced, in its fall budget statement, that it would dole out C$600 million ($450 million in real money) to publishers and joournalists, to keep such organs as the Toronto Star from having to lay off more staff or even close its doors for good. Good news for the ink-stained wretches, not so good for taxpayers.

The problem is greater than a mere 600 mill added to Canada's soaring deficit. As Postmedia's Andrew Coyne points out (to his credit), in "Liberals' $600M aid package for news media will irrevocably politicize the press", it is hard not to see the massive handout as a less-than-subtle attempt to buy off what's left of the independent press, and co-opt them into the liberal/Liberal propaganda machine... as if the dominance of the CBC and the Red Star weren't bad enough.

But (I hear you ask), didn't the government say that the recipients of the pieces of silver would be determined by an "independent panel of journalists"? Oh yes... a panel chosen by the government in the same way and for the same reasons as the "independent" senators now being packed into the Red Chamber. Mr Coyne writes, "I don’t actually think the government will appoint a group of card-carrying Liberal hacks to this 'independent panel.' They won’t need to."

Indeed. Walt predicts that those appointed to the "independent" panel will be reliably "progressive" journalists of a pinkish hue, like CBC propagandists Rosemary Barton, Paul Hunter and Keith Boag, and CTV's Evan Solomon. Not appointed will be Rex Murphy, Ezra Levant, Mark Steyn and Gavin McInnes. Lifetime pct .989.

"To hell with it," mr Coyne concludes. "To hell with all of it. No newspaper publisher should have anything to do with this plan. And no journalist worthy of the name should go anywhere near that accursed panel."

VIDEO: CBC stunned by American prof's criticism of Chrystia Freeland

About three months before WWW made its debut in the blogosphere, Walt had the pleasure of meeting with the delectable Reshmi Nair, who was then a rookie bingo-caller with Canada's CTV News. Ms Nair went on to bigger and better (?) things. Having drunk multiple doses of liberal Koolaid, she is now occupies an anchor's chair at Wallyworld [Newsworld, shurely! Ed.], the CBC's answer to the Clinton News Network.

Canada's state broadcaster evidently equips its staff with powerful PC filters which protect them from seeing or hearing truths which conflict with the prevailing liberal orthodoxy. That, at any rate, is the opinion of Frank H. Buckley, Foundation Professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University. He joined The Rebel's Ezra Levant last week to discuss his recent appearance on the CBC where he criticized the Liberals' incompetence during the NAFTA negotiations.

That Professor Buckley should lay much of the blame for the Trudeau Liberals' failure to get a deal with the USA at the feet of the poster girl for gender equity, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, comes as no surprise to me, since I've been saying the same things for some time now. I've also questioned the reasons for the Canadian Broadcorping Castration's love affair with the fragrant (and sometimes braless) Ms Freeland. Check out these posts:

How much longer will the Canadian people have to suffer for the naïveté and ineptitude of their Liberal government? Answer: With luck, just another 13 months.
Can it get worse? Answer: Yes. Right now no-one (in said government) thinks President Trump is going to make good his threat to scupper NAFTA. Just wait.
Could it get even worse? Answer: Again, yes. It's entirely possible that the Canadian sheeple may be gulled by the CBC and other lamestream meeja into believing that failure to get a trade deal is actually a victory for Mr Socks in that he stood up the Orange Monster from Down South, with the result that they re-elect him and the insufferable Ms Freeland.

Climate Barbie apologizes for tweet praising Syria

Following Walt's posting of "Canuck Minister tells The Rebel to stop calling her names" (WWW 4/11/17 - includes video), Ezra Levant, whose The Rebel website coined the name by which Catherine McKenna would prefer not to be known tweeted: "Appointed to fill a gender quota; unable to control her emotions when criticized; spends taxes on vanity photo shoots. #ClimateBarbie fits."

His point is not that Ms McKenna, like Chrystia Freeland, is one of the terminally entitled limousine liberals who gets her hair colour out of a bottle and any ideas which may temporarily reside in her head from the Toronto Red Star. The problem is that Climate Barbie is a classic example of the Peter Principle. The Peter Principle (by Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull, 1969), for those who haven't read it, states that people rise in an organization until they reach the level of their incompetence. Ms McKenna, now nominally in charge of one of the more sensitive portfolios in the Canadian cabinet, has actually risen above that level.

Yesterday, taking a break from defending herself for defending herself, the Climate Barbie was forced to admit that "clearly a mistake was made" after a tweet from her official departmental account praised Syria for joining the Paris climate agreement. The tweet has since been deleted, but we have a screen shot. Here 'tis.

Nicaragua and Syria were the final two countries to sign on to the climate accord, leaving the United States as the only UN member state not supporting the agreement. The tweet attracted dozens of complaints from other Twitter users, many of them pointing to the widely suspected use of chemical weapons by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The celebratory Nicaragua and Syria tweet was sent from @ec_minister. Its description says it is run by Environment and Climate Change Canada, Parks Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. Ms McKenna tweeted her response to the controversy from her personal account, @cathmckenna. "Clearly a mistake was made from my Dept twitter. We've been clear that the murderous Assad regime must end attacks against its people."

Well, maybe we're being a bit hard on Climate Barbie. Surely it's a bit unfair to ask the Minister of Stopping the Sky from Falling to take responsibility for communications sent out by the minions under her... errr... control. Walt suggests that in future she delegate adverse comments (along with whines about being called names) upwards to her boss, the self-proclaimed feminist Junior Trudeau. He's good at apologies, and totally undeserving of his rep for being a bit of an airhead himself.

VIDEO: Soros, Trudeau plot to flood Canada with Muslim "refugees"

On Thursday, in "UK 'terror incident' - Guess the missing word!", Walt called attention to a motion -- M-103 -- by Iqra Khalid, a Muslim activist and Liberal member of Canada's parliament, calling for an "all-government" effort to combat "Islamophobia". "All government" = total government, as in... wait for it... totalitarianism. No more criticism of Islam. No questions about welcoming Islamic extremists into the Great No-longer-white North. No more freedom of speech.

M-103 passed easily, as expected, with all the Gliberals and the socialist NDP members voting for it, and only the Conservatives opposed. Stay tuned for news of further measures to censor the Canuck meeja (although they already do a pretty good job of censoring themselves) and silence the voices of the Canadian people.

Agent 6 has sent us an e-mail raising the very good question of what and who is behind Canuck Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's version of Angela Merkel's discredited and despised "Willkommenkultur". I'm tempted to repost every episode of The Rebel ever made featuring Gavin McInnes. But they have their own site plus a channel on YouTube [plus you don't want to appear so lazy. Ed.] so I'll leave you to follow them on your own. I reserve my right, though, to pass along, through WWW, rants that tickle my funnybone more than a little. One such is Mr McInnes's comments on the excruciating political correctness of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, disappearing soon (if we're lucky) at a cinema near you.

One of Walt's favourite bloggers/pundits/whatever is Ezra Levant of TheRebel.media. Having stood up to the socialist government of his home province, Alberta, who wanted to shut him up by declaring him a "non-journalist", Mr. Levant is doing a series on the effects of Muslim mass migration on Europe. The "Million Muslim March" is what he calls it. In this video, he interviews Muslim men in Malmo, Sweden, a city the Muslims have turned into "New Somalia" in just 20 years. Prepare to be outraged, not so much by the attitudes of the Muslim layabouts, but by the willful blindness to reality of the Swedish woman who speaks in the second part of the video.



By the way... there's a commercial in there for a "Rebel Cruise". Sail the seas with Ezra and like-minded folks. Who knew? I'd be tempted to go, if only I didn't get seasick. I'm a great believer in terra firma; the more firmer, the less terror.

What does Walt read?

Ed. here. It's been a while since we dipped into the virtual mailbox to answer readers' questions. Chris P. Bacon, of Wynot NE poses a rather obvious question -- so obvious that no-one ever asked before. What blogs [Chris asks] does Walt read? Here's a half-dozen.

It should be rather obvious to regular readers of WWW that Walt follows internationally published author, free speech advocate and general curmudgeon Mark Steyn. Mr. Steyn's blog is called Steyn Online: The One-Man Global Content Provider. His writings have been the subject of numerous ill-founded complaints to various "human rights" tribunals, and have been quoted with approval right here on WWW. Steyn Online often has links to the author's radio interviews, worth listening to. And he's a fan of hockey and Frank Sinatra. What more recommendation do you need?

Another free speech advocate Walt admires is Ezra Levant, a Canadian lawyer, journalist political activist. (Not all activists are of the left!) As publisher of the now-defunct Western Standard magazine, he was hauled before the Alberta Human Rights Commission for publishing the Danish cartoons of Mohammed. Another blog which features terrific video rants is The Remnant Newspaper, which actually began in 1967 as a newspaper for traditional Catholics appalled by the "reforms" of Vatican II. Under the editorship of Michael Matt, it has evolved into a fine online blog for faithful Catholics and others concerned about the demise of the Church and Christian values generally. The Remnant often features "The Mike and Chris Show", in which Mr. Matt and Catholic lawyer and author Christopher Ferrara dissect the latest follies of Pope Francis and other "religious leaders". Walt gave you a sample just last week: "Luther's Revenge: The Surrender of Pope Francis".

Speaking of Christian values, Walt recommends Blazing Cat Fur, which is not just about the Catholic Church, but about the interface between Christian values and geopolitics. The current landing page features articles on British Columbia First Nations (read: Indians), Muslim terrorism in Belgium, and a woman's warning to Missoula MT residents about the “civil unrest” they might be facing should the Obama administration’s plans to plant foreign migrants in the town go through. Warning: lots of advertising on this blog; use your pop-up blocker.

And speaking of fur... take a gander at Five Feet of Fury (geddit?), written by Kathy Shaidle. Ms Shaidle shares Walt's tendency to retweet good stuff from other sources, and repost interesting videos. Her blog covers much the same mix as WWW, without the religion. On February 4th she featured "What Mark Steyn said about Muslim migrants — months before Paris, Cologne".

Finally, and still speaking of fur, we have Small Dead Animals: the Roadkill Diaries, the very creative work of Catherine McMillan, a sometime photographer and artist from (it says here) Delisle, Saskatchewan. Lots of politics here with a nice admixture of arts, culture and criticism of the meeja, as in the following quote from "Captain Capitalism":

Muslims force Canadian private school to "accommodate" them

The following comment on a decision of the Alberta Human Rights Commission -- "promoting human rights for everyone except straight white Christians" -- took over five months to find its way to Walt's inbox. Many thanks to Agent 6 for sending the link.

Here's the set-up. Webber Academy is a private, independent, non-denominational school in Calgary, Alberta (Canada's version of Dallas). No-one is allowed to pray there. Or, we should say, no-one was allowed to pray there. Until, that is, the parents of two teens -- Sarmad Amir and Naman Siddique -- decided to challenge school policies which forbade praying on the grounds of the school.

The two Muslim youths were admitted to Webber Academy in late 2011. For the first few weeks, school staff accommodated their request to pray by allowing them to use an empty classroom. But in December 2011, their parents received a call from the school saying the children would now need to leave the school premises to pray.

The boys began going outside, but still on school property, when timings of some of the five Muslim daily devotions coincided with class hours. If there was a blizzard outside [When wouldn't there be? Ed.] or if it was too cold to pray [??? Ed.], the pair would use a nook or cranny inside instead.

Come February, Webber wrote the boys' parents to say that because the school’s policies were being ignored the boys would not be accepted for enrolment for the next academic year. The parents, instead of moving their children to a Muslim school as might reasonably be expected, ran to the Alberta government and cried "discrimination".

Their human rights complaint was not unexpected, nor was the response of the Alberta Human Rights Commission, which, predictably, sided with the parents, even though their children were being treated exactly the same as all the other students.

Wrote the Commission, "Allowing two of 900 students to pray behind closed doors for a period of five to 10 minutes is insignificant in the context of religious identity, affiliation or influence." Any reader able to explain in clear English what that means is requested to send a postcard to Walt, with a copy to the HRC.

What it means to Webber Academy is a fine of C$26,000 ($19,250 in real money, as of this afternoon). Case closed? Perhaps not, as an appeal was planned. While we wait to see what eventuates, here are some comments from professional curmudgeon and crusader against political correctness, Ezra Levant.

Probably, given that Mr. Levant is being prosecuted for making "inappropriate remarks" about the Alberta Human Rights Commission. The case is due to be heard next month. Parents to pull kids out of school to protest ON pro-LGBT sex ed plan

Ontario's lesbian premier, Kathleen Wynne, met last week with a token handful of parents opposed to her new sex education curriculum, which normalizes homosexuality, transgenderism, and premarital sex. Shortly after the meeting she again refused to budge on their call for a serious consultation with parents. She announced that there would be no changes in the content of the curriculum, and no delay in implementing it.

Starting in September, Ontario teachers -- even in taxpayer-funded "Catholic" schools -- will start telling kids as young as six everything the state things they need to know about homosexuality, gay "marriage", and the ins and outs of sex [Watch it! Ed.] including the deviant varieties.

Given the intransigence of Premier Wynne and the queer lobby in Ontario's Minister of Education, concerned parents are going ahead with plans for a student strike, now set for the week of May 4th. LifeSiteNews quotes one organizer as saying the curriculum is in conflict with the religious beliefs and cultural values of many families.

For Ghada Melek, of The Well Informed Parent, it is the content that is most disturbing. Ms Melek told LifeSiteNews she got together with about 30 professionals in the Brampton area to analyze the sex ed curriculum and to gather the expert opinion of psychologists, doctors, and child educators. They found 22 objectionable or age-inappropriate components and drafted their own alternative curriculum. When they presented their draft to the government, they were patronized with clichés and their recommendations were rejected.

Ms Melek said the biggest problem with the sex ed curriculum was its promotion of gender identity with primary school students. "We propose putting it off to Grade 10. Introducing it earlier, when children may be innocently exploring gender roles, is too risky. It might lead children to draw the wrong conclusions about their own identities."

The Well Informed Parent group's research also indicated that teaching about "sexual consent"” in Grades 7 and 8 is also problematic, because it might make children think that if they aren’t having sex by then they are abnormal. "It normalizes and legitimizes pretty dangerous behaviour."

The group also found the curriculum overestimated the effectiveness of condoms in prevent sexually transmitted diseases. They are supporting the strike, and encouraging those who can’t afford to take a week off to at least pull their children out of school on the first day, May 4th.

Another voice has been raised against the LGBT-positive sex education curriculum being forced on the people of Ontario by that province's Liberal government and its lesbian Premier Kathleen Wynne. In "Why the Critics of the Ontario Sex-Ed Curriculum are Right" Professor Scott Masson, of Tyndale College in Toronto, argues that the new sex-ed curriculum vastly expands the teaching role of the state at the expense of parental authority.

Prof. Masson accuses the new curriculum of promoting a libertine attitude toward adolescent sex, which is lethal for the health of any society. From the beginning of the disciplines of anthropology and sociology up to now, he says, studies have concluded time and again that societies thrive to the extent that they nurture sexual restraint and monogamous marriage.

Here are some of the very strong points made by Prof. Masson, with emphasis by Walt.

The critics of this curriculum are right because it is nothing other than an experiment on their children by the children of the sexual revolution. Without any consideration for love or marriage - there is nary a mention of either in this infamous 244 page document - it speaks of sex in the anodyne consumerist terms of choice, of sex without moral, religious or societal consequences.

It is the teaching not of a just society, but of a perverted individualism that separates children not only from the values of the parents that bore, love and nurture them, but the idea that they too will one day be responsible for children when this government and its philosopher-kings lie on the ash heap of history.

At least since Plato, philosophers have argued that parents are naturally unfit to educate their children. In an ideal state, philosopher-kings such as he ought to usurp their role. Plato had no children. But the enlightened Rousseau, whose ideas ground modern educational theory, was so enamoured with the idea of the state’s responsibility in administering social justice, and in absolving himself of parental responsibility, that he placed the five children he conceived out of wedlock in state orphanages.

In his 1935 BBC radio debate with another statist educator, philosopher Bertrand Russell, G.K. Chesterton wryly retorted what every reasonable person recognizes. The immoral example of exceptional men like Rousseau proves the rule: Parents are by nature best positioned to bring up their children. They don’t raise themselves.

In the United Nations' declaration on Rights of the Child (1959), parents were declared to have primary responsibility in educating their children. The declaration was meant to set a hedge of protection for families against the totalitarian impulse of philosopher-kings.

Cambridge anthropologist J.D. Unwin's monumental work Sex and Culture (1934) studied 80 primitive tribes and six known civilizations over 5000 years of history. It strongly correlated the success of a civilization to the degree of sexual restraint it observed. "Any human society is free to choose either to display great energy or to enjoy sexual freedom; the evidence is that it cannot do both for more than one generation."

The life or death of a civilization, which is at stake in the Christian teaching of natural sexual monogamy [argues] in favour of teaching that monogamy [is] essential to the health of the individual and to creating a more just society.

[Chesterton and Russell debated] the age-old question of which adults, which individuals capable of moral responsibility, were fit to do the task of creating a just society. Was it parents in the natural family unit, or the experts, the philosopher-kings?

This brings us to the Ontario sexual education curriculum, whose convictions on human sexual health are not liberating but deleterious. Once again, the debate lies between parental and state jurisdiction in creating a just society. But at the heart of the Ontario sex-ed curriculum is buried the perverse claim that children raise themselves.

This is explicit from the very outset of the curriculum, which commences with the teaching of consent to six-year-olds. To teach children what consent means, even in the rudimentary terms the premier gives of “reading facial expressions and emotions,” is to assume that they have the capacity for moral responsibility to exercise it. This is why the legal age of consent is connected to the moral responsibility of adults.... [Yet] by six, the human eye has not even fully developed.

"Consent" is...to be understood in the cultural Marxist terms of autonomous sexual freedom, and even sexual identity. They are the terms of men from Herbert Marcuse to Michel Foucault, the favourites of the philosopher-kings of our day, whose autonomy is declared precisely against the natural family.

It must not be imposed on the only people whose consent is required, the parents of children in Ontario.

A reader wrote to me yesterday to say that the new curriculum seems almost certain to be implemented unchanged. If I were a betting man, that would be the way I'd bet. BUT... that doesn't mean that the majority who are opposed to forcing the LGBT agenda on innocent children should accept in silence the perverted notions of those who, like Kathleen Wynne and Lez Sandals and Ben Levin, think they know better!

Major victory for freedom of speech in Canada. (Americans, take note!)

Those who, like Walt, believe in freedom of speech can rejoice this weekend. At least in Canada, that is. [Paula D. writes: "Only in Canada, you say? Pity!"] The infamous Section 13 of Canada's Human Right Act, long criticized by free-speech advocates as overly restrictive and tantamount to censorship, has at last been repealed.

A private member's bill sponsored by Conservative Member of Parliament Brian Storseth was passed by the House of Commons recently, in spite of not having received the official endorsement of Steve "Stephen" Harper's Tory government. It duly worked its way through the Senate which passed it before going on holiday this week.

Thus Section 13, which allowed [encouraged, surely! Ed.] complaints to the Canadian Human Rights Commission for "the communication of hate messages by telephone or on the Internet" gets tossed into the dustbin of history... and not a moment too soon!

Mr. Storseth called the law a "flawed piece of legislation" and characterized the human rights tribunal as "a quasi-judicial, secretive body that takes away your natural rights as a Canadian."

"[Section 13] had actually stopped being used as a shield, as I think it was intended, to protect civil liberties, and started being used as a sword against Canadians, and it's because it was a poorly-written piece of legislation in the first place," he said.

Chief wielder of the "sword" was a champion of political correctness fittingly named Richard Warman. The barking mad human rights zealot who, since 2001, brought no fewer than 16 complaints under Section 13. Warman's frivolous and vexatious accusations were all funded by Canadian taxpayers, since the CHRC covers the costs of the complainant, even if the complaint is dismissed.

One person who found this out the hard way, as Agent 9 reminds us, is Father Alphonse de Valk, CSB, the founder of Catholic Insight magazine. In 2006 he got dragged into the war against the excesses of human rights commissions when the CHRC charged him with hate speech after a complaint (from "guess who?") about some writings critical of homosexual behaviour. He was eventually cleared of all charges but still had to pay 1000s of dollars in legal bills.

Producing and disseminating "hate speech" remains a crime in Canada, but regulating it will be left to the courts (as it was previously), not to human rights tribunals. But while anyone -- even a raving loony -- could file a human rights complaint, charges of "hate crimes" under the Criminal Code of Canada require the approval of the Attorney-General.

Also pleased with this unexpected victory for free speech and common sense should be Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant, who have been demonized for writing the truth as they see it. In "How 9/11 killed Canadians' appetite for human-rights speech codes", National Post columnist Jonathan Kay says that "confronting the human rights industry...wasn't just a matter of free-speech principle but a matter of civilizational self-protection. The average Canadian may not give a hoot about his freedom to use the N-word. But he'll be damned if he's going to let the government prevent him from saying what he things about burkas [sic] and terrorists."

The Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) assists in creating conditions within which Catholic teachings can be better understood, cooperates with other organizations in defending civil rights and opposes defamation and discrimination against Catholics on the basis of their beliefs.

"Hate" to say goodbye

At the end of the hippy-dippy 60s, the Liberal Party imposed on Canada, as its new prime minister, one Pierre Elliot Trudeau. The man Allan Fotheringham dubbed "Himself" promised Canadians that when he got through with Canada, they wouldn't recognize it. He was right.

One of the most pernicious laws passed by PET's government, to enact his liberal humanist vision of the future, was the Canadian Human Rights Act, an Orwellian name for a law that actually destroys real rights. Everyone has rights now -- infidels, atheists, pacifists, rioters, vizmins, sexual deviates. Or almost everyone. Certain rights are conspicuous by their absence -- the right to life, and the right to speak your mind freely, not to mention the right to be left alone by the nanny state.

As Ezra Levant wrote today in the Sun papers, the entire law is a corruption of justice. It creates a kangaroo court, run by non-judges, that doesn't follow the same rules and procedures of real courts, but has massive powers to punish and fine people who aren’t politically correct.

According to Levant, the worst part of the law is Section 13, the censorship provision. Section 13 creates a word crime: the crime of publishing or broadcasting anything that can cause hurt feelings. Levant has run afoul of it more than once. So has Mark Steyn, as mentioned here before.

Levant says, and Walt agrees, that Section 13 is an insane law. It is totally contrary to traditions of liberty that go back centuries, inherited from the United Kingdom and more recently the USA, where freedom speech is (supposedly) enshrined in the Bill of Rights.

Last week, Canadian Minister of Justice Rob Nicholson rose in the House of Commons to answer a question about Section 13. The question was about a private member’s bill, introduced by Brian Storseth, a Member of Parliament from northern Alberta. His bill, C-304, would repeal Section 13. The effect would be to let people write and speak the truth, without having to answer to the PC police.

Unfortunately, in the Canadian parliamentary system, private members' bills have little chance of passing without the endorsement of the government. But Mr. Nicholson did endorse it. And he called on all MPs to support it.

So, Bill C-304, is now effectively a government bill. And with a Tory majority in both the House of Commons and the Senate, this bill is as good as enacted.

Canadians can look forward to the end of witch hunts by the Canadian and provincial Human Rights Commissions. The Forces of Good and Progress will no longer be able to persecute their political and religious enemies.

Repealing Section 13 would be the best thing the Harper government has done in five years. But C-304 could yet be derailed, if the lamestream media can rally "progressive public opinion" against it.

Gangsta "culture" goes mainstream

That's Ezra Levant's take on the riots in Britain. Mr. Levant is a columnist for Canada's QMI agency, and has been following the controversy over remarks made by London historian David Starkey. Perhaps he saw Walt's comments yesterday. Or perhaps great minds think alike. [Perhaps Mr. Levant is a little better known than Walt. Ed.]

Whatever... Mr. Levant has also read, or read someone's remarks on Enoch Powell's "Rivers of Blood Speech". Here is part of the column in which Levant puts the trouble down to white and South Asian kids emulating the black gangsta "culture" they see glorified in the media.

Perhaps Starkey could have been more careful; he said white had become black — and then immediately became more precise, meaning they had accepted a particular segment of black culture, namely gangsta rap. But his meaning was perfectly clear — to anyone who has listened to rap music, with its glorification of violence and material excess, and who has seen the glamourization of that lifestyle move from ghettos into the cultural mainstream.

What grown men wear hoodies in public? Or their underwear up high and their pants down low? Those aren’t crimes, of course — maybe fashion crimes. But far more serious is the set of values that has been swallowed along with the cultural touchstones of fashion and diction. [My emphasis. Walt.]

Gangsta culture calls women “hos” and “bitches,” a crude misogyny with an undercurrent of a threat of violence. It glamourizes fighting, shooting and even dying in gangland warfare. It holds that the point of wealth is to squander it on bling and champagne.

Levant's point is that being free to talk about the problems caused by this ignorant, violent, culture of the undersclass -- without being demonized as a racist -- is part of the solution. His column is worth reading in its entirety. Click here to do so.

Majority of Canadians want Tamil boat people sent home

60. That's the percentage of 1500 Canadians polled by Leger Marketing earlier this month, who believe the MV Sun Sea should have been turned back by the Canadian Navy and not allowed to disgorge its cargo of Tamil "refugees".

Only 17% of those polled thought the Tamils should be accepted into Canada as political refugees. So what the government of "Call Me Steve" Harper has done is bow to the wishes of the vocal minority.

That minority includes, of course, the many Tamils and other Sri Lankans, Indians and Pakistanis already in Toronto. Many of them are voters, after all!

And let's not forget the liberal media, determined as they are to be politically correct, even when public opinion in their own "comments" and "talk back" columns is running 5 or 10 to 1 against their editorial opinion.

Even Pierre-Elliot Trudeau, whose vision of a café-au-lait Canada full of Liberal voters is responsible for this mess, foresaw that situations might arise in which "rights" have to give way to the best interests of the majority. This is one such situation.

What's needed now is for Mr. Harpoon's government to grow a set and do what the majority of Canadians think must be done.
