Poor Len's first look at the 2025-2026 Montréal Canadiens
Our National Sports (as long as it's hockey) Editor, Poor Len Canayen, was thrilled yesterday to find that RDS is carrying all the Montréal Canadiens pre-season games. Here's how he saw last night's match with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Thank youse, Hed. For an exhibition game, last night's contest was good, entertaining hockey, and le bleu, blanc et rouge won 2-1 in a 5-round shootout. That said, one would have thought that the supposedly improved Habs could do better against a Pittsburgh team that rested Crosby, Malkin, Letang and its other top players. The narrow victory doesn't inspire confidence.Preliminary indications are that the Habs, in spite of strengthening their defensive corps over the summer, remain a team with just one good line. They rested Cole Caufield, Jury Slavkovsky, and captain Nick Suzuki, as well as ace-to-be defenceman Lane Hutson, leaving fans wondering who could be counted on to score.
Answer: no-one. The Habs' goals came Owen Beck and, in the shoot-out, Oliver Kapanen, both of whom played a couple of games with the team last season and failed to impress. Give Beck his due, though. He was 70% at the faceoff dot, had 4 shots, and deserved the first star. He played the kind of game he needed to have a shot at filling the only available (on paper) vacancy on the forward lines.
Another forward with a shot, albeit a long one, is Filip Mesar, who played on Beck's right last night. With Laval last year, he had a disappointing 18 points in 42 games. But he made his presence felt yesterday, showing good puck control and patience, as well as willingness to get into the dirty areas, à la Brendan Gallagher. It was he who began the sequence that led to Beck's third-period goal.
It was nice to see Mesar trying to show some finesse, for he had declared at the rookie training camp that he wanted to show more meanness, and was willing to drop the gloves, although at 5'10" and 184 lbs he's far from the heavyweight class. "We're not looking for a new Chris Nilan," said Coach Martin St-Louis. "You can see he's got good hands and good intelligence. His game has matured, and that's good to see."And then there was the guy the fans came to see, Ivan Demidov. The problem with him, it says here, is that he needs someone to play with. Last night he was on the right of Jake Evans, not a top centre, with Patrik Laine on the left. I won't riff on Laine for being lazy because in the pre-season one doesn't expect the established players to give their all. Still, he could have done more than take one shot and then go into flotation mode.
It was Demidov who brought the Habs to life in the third period. Tired of waiting for someone to pass the puck to him, he showed that he can keep the puck out of reach of any defender, making moves which decades ago would have been described as "Savardian". He did have a couple of shots but was a bit off-target on one and foiled by the Penguins goalie on the other. No worries about his future with the "A" team. Just please, please put him on a line with a good centre and a mates who like to be part of tic-tac-toe plays.
And that's it except to say that Jacob Fowler, making his debut between the pipes, looked calm and collected, and pulled off one spectacular save to preserve the tie and force overtime. I could see the coach going with a three-goalie rotation (with Samuel Montembault and Jacub Dobes) for the first 10 or15 games, before deciding which two will be the regular goaltenders. Is it possible to have a Jake as a starter and another Jake as the backup?

Your Singhs today (Peel Region edition)
Around 0200 on April Fool's Day, a 22-year-old motorist lost control of his Mazda 3 and smashed into a pole in Mississausage ON, killing his passenger.
Peel Regional Police say the Mazda was travelling north along Erin Mills Parkway when it collided with a silver Jeep which was making a left turn onto Vista Boulevard, about two kilometres south of Britannia Road. Following that collision, the Peelers say, the Mazda careened down the road and collided with a hydro pole.
The driver and a passenger in the Mazda were transported to the hospital with serious injuries where the passenger, a 20-year-old man, died. The driver of the Jeep was not seriously injured.
This weekend -- more than five months after the tragic events -- the cops finally laid charges (dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death; operation while impaired by drugs causing death, and racing a motor vehicle) against... wait for it... Armaan Singh Gill, of Mississauga.
In spite of the DUI charge, the report of the incident published this weekend in the Toronto Sun, is headlined "Speed allegedly a factor in deadly Mississauga crash, motorist charged". The deadly driver simply as "Armaan Gill". No mention is made of his possible connection with the notorious Singh School of Truck Driving.
Note from Ed.: The picture above does not show Armaan Singh Gill. It may not even be a Singh of the Zodiac. 👳😄

Dr Jordan Peterson & Victor Davis Hanson talk to & about Charlie Kirk
There are times when the world is too much with us, and this weekend was one of those times. The tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, cut down by a loonie leftist for daring to talk about his beliefs, filled my mind as well as the ether. I needed time to process what I was seeing, hearing and reading.
Rather than add my pitiful two cents worth, I'm reposting two excellent videos which appeared on YouTube. The first, featuring Victor Davis Henson talking about Charlie (I want to remember him as Charlie, not "Mr Kirk") with Hugh Hewitt, appeared on the 11th. The second is an interview with Charlie conducted by Dr Jordan Peterson on 19 March 2025.
The two videos, combined, give you all you need to know about Charlie, who is already being referred to, rightly, as a political, even a religious martyr. RIP. We send a big thank-you to Agent 6, for taking on Ed.'s role and providing us with the URLs.
Charlie Kirk had many friends and admirers, among them Victor Davis Hanson, who joined me today to talk about Charlie, what moved him, and what his assassination could portend for the U.S. Victor’s new book “The End of Everything” is the somber backdrop to yesterday tragedy.
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson engages in conversation with Charlie Kirk -- author, speaker, and founder and CEO of Turning Point USA. They delve into his emergence as a leading voice in the Conservative movement, his choice to bypass traditional higher education, and the early indicators of ideological bias in academia.
The discussion also addresses how the university system has not only tilted toward the hyper-feminine but has transformed into a large-scale scam. Additionally, they examine academia’s departure from timeless questions of good and evil, faith, and foundational philosophy, to a focus on Marxist economics and cultural capture.
In addition to his role at Turning Point USA, Charlie also served as the CEO and founder of Turning Point Action, a related entity operating under a 501(c)(4) status. Turning Point Action’s mission is to embolden the conservative base through grassroots activism and to provide voters with the necessary resources to elect true conservative leaders. Turning Point Action has earned recognition as one of the leading grassroots forces in the country today.

Ammunition in Kirk Shooting Engraved With Transgender, Antifascist Ideology: Sources
Walt was only able to get partway through the WSJ paywall. Here's what it says.
Investigators found ammunition engraved with expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology inside the rifle that authorities believe was used in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, according to an internal law-enforcement bulletin and a person familiar with the investigation.
The older-model .30 caliber hunting rifle was discovered in the woods near the scene of Wednesday’s shooting at Utah Valley University, wrapped in a towel with a spent cartridge still in the chamber, the sources said. There were also three unspent rounds in the magazine, all with wording on them.
Let's see how the queer-loving loonie leftists get out of this one!
UPDATE added 12/9/25 @ 0618 FMT: The answer to the paragraph about is to be found in "CNN Describes Trans, Antifa Phrases On Charlie Kirk Assassin’s Weapons As ‘Related To Cultural Issues’", on The Federalist.
Meanwhile, President Trump has taken to TV early this morning to announce "We have him!" Details are expected before noon. Stay tuned!

Probably just a coincidence
This is, after all, the second time a transgender shooter has claimed lives at a Christian institution in about two years. This time, Robin Westman — born Robert — killed two and injured 17 more before killing himself. In 2023, in the Covenant School shooting, Audrey Elizabeth Hale — who identified as Aiden Hale — killed six and injured two.

Help Kids Canada - a scam or only half a scam?
Agent 3, being something of a cynic [When he's cooking, is he a kitchen cynic? ed.] asked the boy if he could prove that Help Kids Canada is in fact a registered charity. The boy appealed to his "supervisor", who just happened to be driving by in a white van, who said yes, it is so, and here's the registration number for all who want proof.
Now munching on his chocolate bar, Agent 3 asks Walt if this is true, and why a reputable charity would be selling candy bars door to door. Here is what Walt found out.
Help Kids Canada is a registered charity. Where the kid and his supervisor lie is when they say that they represent or work for HKC. They do not. Here's the truth of the relationship between the chocolate sellers and the charity, according to the latter's website as it existed in July of 2010, when Walt's report was first published.
The supervisors and the kids who are selling chocolates are not employed by our organization.Their connection to our charity is that they support our organization by donating the net proceeds from the chocolate sales to Help Kids Canada. By "net proceeds" we mean what is left after the cost of chocolates and the cost of distribution, including the cost of transportation, personal expenses and payments to the kids, are deducted from their gross proceeds.
So there you have it. Those poor scrawny kids who knock at your door are being paid, but the people really making the money are their supervisors. (Agent 3 says the gal in the van was absolutely porcine.) It's very much a for-profit business. If there happens to be anything left, they give a little to the charity, and get a tax receipt for so doing.
It's a nice cozy arrangement for all concerned...except Agent 3 and others who get conned into paying a high price for a rather mediocre chocolate bar, all because they thought they were helping some poor kids.

Your Singhs today (US-Canada border edition)
The Canadian Border Services Agency (the equivalent of the US CBP) officers are hooking their thumbs under their suspenders today for having derailed a whopping $42 million beaverbucks worth of cocaine flooding into Canuckistan in two separate busts in August.
The seizures occurred one day apart at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Point Edward, near Sarnia, in early August. On the 13th of August, a commercial truck belonging to Diversity Truck Lines* [Ed., please check this] arriving from the US of A was referred for a secondary examination.
During the trailer inspection, CBSA officers discovered suspected cocaine hidden in six boxes. The total weight of the narcotics was 150 kilos, with an estimated street value of $18.8 million ($13.6 million in real money). Gurjeet Singh, 28, of... wait for it... Brampton ON, was arrested and transferred along with the narcotics to the custody of the RCMP.
The next day, border officers referred another tractor-trailer entering from the US for a secondary examination. Officers found 199 kilos of suspected cocaine in the trailer of the commercial load, with an estimated value of $24.9 million. Abdikadir Egal, 38, of Etobicoke, was transferred along with the drugs to the RCMP. To judge by his name, Mr Egal is not a Sikh, but a Somali -- a "refugee", no doubt. recruited by the usual suspects from the Singh School of Truck Driving.
Both men have been charged by the Mounties with importation of cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking under the controlled drugs and substances act. The investigations are ongoing, as they say.
Canuckistan's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree (no relation) was quick to issue a statement which he hopes will be read by President Trump, as follows: "These recent seizures of illegal narcotics underscore the vital partnership between the CBSA and the RCMP in protecting Canada’s borders. I have visited the Blue Water Bridge and seen up close the unwavering commitment and diligence from the CBSA and RCMP, and their respective leadership in stopping the entry of illegal substances and goods into Canada. Their work makes all of us safer."
Walt says, hold your applause. There's lots more drugs and smugglers of which we'll Singh in due course.
* Thanks to BCF for identifying the trucking company. and to DM, a commenter on BCF, for the info on Mr Egal's nationality. Most Somalis are Muslim, by the way. How's that for the diversity that makes Canada what it is.
