VIDEO: Scott Adams deserves an award for courage

Early in 2023, Scott Adams, creator of the super-popular Dilbert comic strip, said the quiet part out loud. 

In a YouTube comment on a Rasmussen Reports poll in which black people were asked to agree or disagree with the phrase "It's OK to be white", Mr Adams, who is white, said that black people who disagreed with the statement were a "hate group." He added, "I would say, based on the current way things are going, the best advice I would give to white people is to get the hell away from black people…because there is no fixing this." 

The PC police, led by the Washington Post and the New York Times, accused Mr Adams of racism, and that his remarks "promoted segregation." Imagine that! In the opinion of many, including yr obdt servant, what he said wasn't racism, but realism. 

The knee-jerk reaction of the Los Angeles Times, the USA Today group, and almost all the papers in which Dilbert appeared was to cancel the strip, effectively cancelling Scott Adams' career. He predicted that most of his income would be gone within weeks. by next week. 

Mr Adams refused to be silenced, and started a vlog called "Coffee With Scott Adams", published on Rumble and, more recently, on YouTube. It was on his vlog that he announced, last May, that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. The cancer has spread to his bones. It is only treatable, not curable. 

Scott Adams is effectively under a death sentence, but he is keeping up the vlog, now known as "No Coffee With Scott Adams", even while undergoing -- and that's surely the right word -- radiation treatment. His livestream offers a candid hospital update, along with discussions on current events and personal reflections. Here's today's instalment.

No matter what one thinks of Mr Adams' political views, it's impossible to watch him struggle to keep keep talking, smiling (as best he can) through his tears, without feeling sympathetic. IMHO he deserves an award of some kind. The only award we have at WWW is the Wally, but that's not appropriate, so we offer instead our thoughts and prayers... seriously.

"Show me a man who sucks and I'll show you the bitch who ruined him." So sez Gavin Innes (one of Walt's favourite podcasters) about the now-cancelled Jimmy Kimmel. In case you've been on Mars for the last week or so, Kimmel has been suspended indefinitely by Disney-owned ABC after making inflammatory remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk and spreading a BlueAnon hoax that suspect Tyler Robinson was "MAGA", rather than a far-left gay man in a relationship with a furry  transvestite

Gavin McInnes. a founder of the Proud Boys (from which he has dissociated himself) and co-founder of Vice magazine, used to be friends with Jimmy Kimmel. In the wake of the unfunny ABC late-night host's suspension -- long overdue -- Mr McInnes offered this postmortem of Kimmel's career, in which he blames Molly McNearney, his ultra-woke second wife, for Kimmels death spiral into shrill leftism.

"When I knew him, he was a great guy and a very mean guy — like, in a good way, kind of punk," Mr McInnes says on this Get Off My Lawn podcast. "I mean, the Jimmy Kimmel you saw with The Man Show and even before that, he was in sports radio. He used to contribute to Vice all the time. He was a very good cartoonist, believe it or not. And he would do comics for us, and he would do the Do’s and Don’ts with me. And I loved that he was mean… Be an asshole, it’s funny."

 

Mr McInnes goes on to mention Molly McNearney, who worked her way up the writing staff on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the mid-2000s and eventually married the alleged funnyman. Mr McInnes calls Ms McNearney, "the only person on his staff that wasn’t totally insane...and she fucked her boss...and they eloped. They got married in 2013. It pays to fuck your boss. I highly recommend it."

Mr McInnes then calls Ms McNearney "an insufferable liberal twat who ruined [Kimmel]… There's pre-Molly and there's post-Molly Jimmy Kimmel, just like Howard Stern. There's pre-Beth [Ostrowky-Stern] and there’s post-Beth Howard Stern. And Jimmy Kimmel and Howard Stern are friends, and then Molly and Beth hang out and they discuss rescuing kittens and reproductive rights of cats… 

"When these guys get their trophy wives — and I know Molly doesn’t look like a trophy — they want to get invited to the best dinner parties, and that means you have to please the wives. And what are women’s politics? They’re all woke. So these guys become woke to appease their trophy wife, and then it spills onto the show."

Mr McInnes's main point is that the left is responsible for pushing the cancel culture to which one of their "stars" has now fallen "victim", and needs to feel the pain they have inflicted on others in the current culture wars. "The gloves are off," sez Mr McInnes to the wokesters. "We’re hypocrites. Fuck you. You started this war. You kicked me in the balls, so I'm gouging out your fucking eyes."

Jimmy Kimmel, honorary mayor of Dildo NL CANCELLED

The summer of 2019 was quiet -- as usual -- in the tiny Newfoundland fishing village of Dildo, until August, when this happened.

On August 2nd, Jimmy Kimmel [Who he? Ed.], the host of a late night talk show called Jimmy Kimmel Live, started his allegedly funny show with a segment called "Canada has been hiding their Dildo". It was a story Newfoundlanders and Labradorians were able to rally behind and laugh about, and Lard Tunderin' Jaysus, dit ever put the province on the map, like never before!

What followed was 13 days of late night television, and years of unheard of tourism success for the region. As many as 4 or 5 (including YVT) showed up almost every day just to take pictures of the sign and send postcards bearing a fancy cancel which Canada Post made up just for the occasion.

 

Kimmel checked in almost nightly with the people of Dildo, sent security guard and international correspondent Guillermo to help run his campaign and used the Dildo Brewing Company as campaign headquarters. 

While Kimmel initially ran for the seat unopposed, rumours of an opponent stirred, none other than Matt Damon. [Who he? Ed.] But Kimmel remained strong in his pursuit of the mayor's chair, holding a press conference on his show. 

He stood firm on a "missionary" style of addressing taxation, and pointed to the fact that no one else was running for election. This was more than enough to win over the people of Dildo, The vote on August 15th was anything but close, and Kimmel was named mayor of the local service district in a landslide.

And look at him now, a victim of the cancel cuture which he and all the other Hollywood loonie lefties supported when it was them doing the cancelling. Now the shoe is on the other (i.e. right) foot, and Kimmel is looking for work. FAFO. But cheer up Jimmy. Your fans in Dildo (Sid and Doris Bonkers) will surely welcome you back.... Or maybe not....

Footnote: On his visit a couple of years ago, Walt was pleased to see this sign of support for Ukraine nailed to the front of the Society of United Fisherman hall, just across from the brewery.

Charlie Kirk, RIP

In April, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, posted, "Assassination culture is spreading on the left." Sadly, that proved to be prophetic, as an assassin took Charlie's life yesterday while he was speaking at Utah Valley University. He was only  31 years old.

Charlie Kirk's time as a Republican influencer in the new right was much too brief. Kirk founded Turning Point USA when he was just 18 years old and spent his media career making the argument for conservatism in a generally hostile media ecosystem. 

That’s what he was doing Wednesday afternoon when he was fatally shot in the neck. In the moment before the loud snap of a gun could be heard and a gushing injury appeared on his neck, he finished a sentence about "violence".

So far two suspects have been arrested and then released. As is customary these days, police say the shooting is still under investigation and they have no clue (duh!) as to the shooter's identity or motive. 

Still, it's impossible not to make any connection to politics and the growing wave of societal derangement. Mr Kirk was one of the American right's top conservative influencers. Now, after years of the progressive left preaching about revolution, about words being violence and about President Donald Trump being the second coming of Hitler, he's been "cancelled". RIP.

Charlie Kirk was reviled by the left not just because he was a Trump supporter, but also because he was so effective. He founded a media organization that, along with a handful of others on the right, played a key role in shattering the monopoly of ideas held by the left-leaning mainstream media. 

But he famous mostly for his debate-style "Prove me wrong!" videos, in which he sat with a microphone, listening to a long diatribe from a progressive audience member attempting to prove him wrong, and afterwards replying with a firehose of counterpoints. His style was sharp and humorous. It was a golden formula for engagement on Youtube, and no doubt an outlet for closeted young conservatives and disillusioned liberals who rarely get to see these beliefs expressed in the wild.

Charlie Kirk was a Christian*, a firm believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Just last week, he quoted Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." A few days ago, he posted, "Jesus defeated death so you can live." Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

* On his vlog Return to Tradition, Anthony Stine reveals that, shortly before his death, Charlie Kirk and his wife began attending Holy Mass once or twice a month at St. Bernardette's Catholic Church in Scottsdale AZ, and was very close to coming into the Church.

VIDEO: What's wrong with the Sydney Sweeney ad?

Walt was not far enough away from civilization (?) to avoid the controversy over this ad for American Eagle jeans. "Some people" (you know who I mean) are criticizing the ad for being "provocative", "divisive" and even... wait for it... "racist"! Well, let's have a look.

 

I'd say 1000s of real women are running down to their local clothing emporium, even as we speak, to buy a pair or three. And hundreds of thousands of real men are buying a pair (or three) for their significant others. 

Why not? Well, the wokesters at The Body Optimist will tell you why this ad offends them, in an article headed: "It's even racist!": Sydney Sweeney criticized for an ad deemed provocative", by Léa Michel (note the pretentious spelling of the name) posted today. No need to follow the link. Walt is going to turn on the bullshit meter and analyze the whole steaming load. The woke BS is in pink and my comments are in brackets.  

Now American Eagle's latest campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney has set social media ablaze. With the slogan "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," the brand aimed for "a stylish homage to denim classics." Except the message wasn't received the same way by everyone. Accused of reviving sexist stereotypes and even flirting with racist codes, the ad campaign has sparked a lively debate about the boundaries between marketing provocation, gendered representation, and latent cultural racism. [Who "sparked" the debate? I didn't hear anyone complaining.]

In the most talked-about clip of recent days, Sydney Sweeney, who rose to fame in the series "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus," repairs a vintage car—a Mustang GT350—wearing a fitted tank top and skinny jeans from the brand. [The video above is not the offending clip. This is the hot one!]  

The whole thing is a mix of modernized pin-up aesthetics and a tribute to the codes of male auto mechanics. [See, for the wokesters, nothing offensive is ever said directly. You have to know the "code" to get the sexist, racist, yada yada message.] She is then seen wiping her hands on her jeans before getting into the vehicle. The slogan, in turn, refers to the cut of the jeans and, according to the brand, the "confidence each person can have when wearing them." 

What could have been a slightly retro and sexy campaign quickly drew the ire of several internet users. Some people saw it as an "anti-woke" or even supremacist message. Others denounced the staging as reducing a woman to her appearance, in a pose that flirts with the most persistent clichés of 1990s marketing. [Some people saw it like that? Were they looking through pink- or mauve-coloured glasses?]

A gendered and racial reading of the message The phrase "superb jeans" has been accused of playing on a double meaning: jeans (pants) and genes (genetics). A potentially problematic pun, according to critics, who point out that in English, the pronunciation is identical (jeans / genes). 

[Wait. It gets worse.] On the X network (formerly Twitter), some voices saw in this choice an allusion to the supposed "purity" of the actress's origins - young, white, blonde, thin - often elevated to a Western aesthetic fantasy. [You bet! I've been trying for years to construct a real fantasy out of a fake reality.]

Criticism also focuses on the actress's posture, her sexualization, and the fact that the campaign once again exploits a hyper-standardized image of femininity: a slim body, a soft gaze, suggested but controlled sexuality, all in a setting that recalls the appropriation of a so-called masculine universe (mechanics) to divert it for aesthetic purposes. An approach deemed dated by some commentators, who denounce a vision still largely dominated by the male gaze. [That's a lot. Pass me the barf bag.]

Faced with the controversy, American Eagle quickly took to its Instagram account to speak out. Refusing to apologize [Good on `em!], the brand insists that the slogan refers only to jeans, the ones worn by the actress, and in no way to anything else. It writes: "The slogan 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans' is and always will be about jeans. Her jeans. Her story." 

She [sic] also says she wants to "continue to celebrate the way each person wears their AE jeans with confidence, in their own way," emphasizing a desire for inclusivity. [Oops, got some weasel words in there, at the last minute.] The brand therefore seems to be taking ownership of its approach, focusing on a visually strong editorial line, even if it means shaking things up. [Shaking what things up? Do they mean the woke narrative that anything that appeals to men and their "toxic masculinit" is baaddd?]

Notably, the White House itself intervened. Steven Cheung, the presidential communications director, posted a message on X declaring: "Cancel culture has no limits. Liberal ideology is twisted, stupid, and blocked, which is a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024." [Right on, Steven!]

This unexpected support, in particularly virulent language, reinforced the idea that this campaign is now being co-opted in an ultra-polarized political climate, both in the United States and elsewhere. [Co-opted by whom? Steven Cheung is a Chinese-American. Is he working for the white supremacists? LOL]

The fact that American Eagle's stock jumped nearly 10% [Forget the jeans. Buy the stock.] after the campaign aired is no coincidence: commercial provocation still pays off, especially in a context of growing rejection of political correctness in certain circles. [Are you in the same circle as Walt?!]

[Last words to the woke.] Ultimately, this campaign highlights a growing tension in contemporary society: how can we speak to the greatest number of people, in an era saturated with images, without offending? Should we please or disturb in order to sell? And at what cost? 

The Sydney Sweeney case also illustrates the tension between female injunctions to emancipation and those that continue to sell a standardized, desirable, and performative femininity. By choosing a renowned pop icon with an image that was both glamorous and accessible, American Eagle knew it wasn't speaking into a vacuum. However, the reception shows how diverse, sometimes contradictory, and deeply politicized contemporary interpretations are. [Last word to Walt: If these ads are divisive, it's only because "certain people" want them to be so, as the culture wars continue.]

"We can be great again!" - The retired general's anti-woke speech the "legacy media" won't let you see

Here's the headline and the lede from an article which appeared in the Ottawa Citizen on November 15th. 

Canadian Forces officers applaud speech slamming Canada's climate change policies, cancel culture, weak leaders

Serving senior Canadian military officers gave a standing ovation to a speech by a retired general who criticized everything from the removal of historical statues and apologies to victims to government climate change policies.

Did you note the date? November 15th. The speech referred to was made by Lt.-Gen. (Retd.) Michel Maisonneuve as he received the Vimy Award, a top Canadian defence award, on November 9th. Excerpts from his anti-woke speech appeared "below the fold" in some of Canada's lickspittle media a day or two later, but no video of the speech itself can be found. Believe me, Ed. has looked!

Nor has a full transcript been published, until today, when the editors of Canada's National Post summoned up the courage to run the full text, which apparently was submitted to them by the general, in response to popular demand. We've copied the whole thing, without permission, and believe Lt.-Gen Maisonneuve will be glad we did so. He wasn't talking just to hear himself, eh!

Lt.-Gen Maisonneuve is a decorated veteran of 35 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and another 10 as Academic Director of le Collège militaire royal [Royal Military College] de Saint-Jean. He is a huge advocate for veterans, and served as the first Chief of Staff of NATO's Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk VA. In his November 9th speech, he pulled no punches in describing what he thinks needs to be done to make Canada great again. The emphasis is mine.

The Vimy Award. How humbling; what a tremendous honour. With this honour comes the opportunity to accept this award with a speech that acknowledges the spirit of Vimy and shares with you my vision for Canada today and for the future.

Canada — once we were great. We stopped the Americans in 1812, we gave the world Billy Bishop, Alexander Graham Bell and Lucy Maud Montgomery. We isolated insulin, invented the zipper and the snowblower. 

In World War One we mobilized 620,000 troops. We were victorious at Vimy Ridge. In World War Two we were brave enough to land at Dieppe, and we secured our beach on D-Day. The Devil’s Brigade remains the template for special forces the world over. Our small country boasted the world’s third largest navy at the end of that conflict. We became internationally recognized peacekeepers and more than 80,000 of us served on missions during the Cold War.

We beat the Russians on their ice in 1972 and a young man named Terry Fox continues to inspire us all with his unparalleled courage and determination. We gave the world the Canadarm in space; we won a world series. When the world changed again on 9/11, Canada stepped up — first to join the coalition of the willing and send in ships and JTF 2. Serving with distinction in Afghanistan — we still mourn the loss of our 159 men and women. Canada was a great nation and though we are faltering today I believe we can be great again.

Since this is my speech, I get to share what I believe Canada needs to do to take the world stage again; to be thought of first when it comes to seeking alliances, to be seen as a serious country once again. What will it take? Well, I believe it will take leadership and service. These two crucial foundations of greatness for any nation have somehow become secondary — lost in these days of entitlement, “me first”, “not my problem” and endless subsidies and handouts.

Let me start with leadership. Leadership applies in all pursuits and at all levels. Great leaders are distinguished by the success of those they lead and the entity they lead — be it a country, an army, a corporation or a sports team. When that entity succeeds, we recognize its leader … and when that entity fails, misses, or misses the playoffs, the leader must — should — take responsibility. 

History has given us many great leaders. Ask yourself: would those leaders have been as successful in today’s world? Well, let’s see; today’s world, where social media captures every move and word spoken — taken in context or not. Where cancel culture still flourishes and there is no call for redaction or amendment even when accusations are proved false. Truth is not a requirement; once cancelled, you are done.

Today’s world, where balanced journalism is difficult to find. The practice of presenting the facts — a truthful illustration of an event, a personality or issue that allowed the reader to form their own opinion — is no longer compulsory in mainstream media. The line between "news" and op-eds has blurred and too often we are subjected to sermons written not by seasoned journalists but by first-year graduates of woke journalism schools. Unbiased reporting seems to have died with Christie Blatchford and Matthew Fisher.

Today’s world, where extremism — once the almost exclusive purview of religious zealots — seems to be flourishing in all aspects of our lives, on the right … and on the left. Some of the most popular "causes" and beliefs of today are embraced by all manner of extremists with no thought of how to achieve this utopian ideal in a responsible or plausible manner.

For example, Canada’s prosperity is being sacrificed at the altar of climate change as opposed to being used to help the world transition to clean energy. Throwing soup and paint at the world’s art treasures is as heinous as it is useless. The perpetrators should be punished, not celebrated.

Today’s world is also where taking personal responsibility for our own actions has disappeared from the landscape while the phenomenon of collective apologies flourishes in our country. Individuals and groups fight over who gets to wear the coveted victim’s cloak. But any role they may have played in their own fate or in injuring others is dismissed as learned behaviour, inherited flaws or generational oppression.

So I am not here to debate whether those great leaders of yesteryear would be as successful in today’s world. But nor will I judge the decisions they made in their time against the standards of today. Enough statues have been toppled; erasing our history is not the solution. 

I believe that the most important leadership skills have not changed and are even more so today than ever. Number one is communication — it is more critical than ever in this world of sound bites and mic dropping. A good leader ensures his followers know where they are going and how to get there. A great leader makes them want to go there. A great leader can take a seemingly insurmountable objective and make it possible to achieve in the hearts and minds of their followers.

Thankfully these leaders still do exist in today's world and there is no better example than Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In his nightly address he clearly, continuously, and passionately articulates the mission to his fellow Ukrainians. Dismissed early on as "an actor, a comedian, a dancer," President Zelenskyy has rallied the world to his just cause. He surrounded himself with good people, made difficult decisions and by communicating, has captured our hearts and souls with Ukraine’s plight. God speed Mr. President and Slava Ukrainii.

Secondly, cohesion, acceptance and tolerance. Today's leaders must stop dividing those they lead! Hasn't history shown us that success as a leader demands cohesion, unity and respect of all those they lead — not just those who agree wholeheartedly with them? Can you imagine a military leader labelling half of his command as deplorables, fringe radicals or less-thans and then expect them to fight as one?

Today’s leaders must find a way to unite; not divide. Leaders lead. There is a difference between making a good decision, based on research and consultation, and making a decision because it is popular or it polls well. The best decisions are those made for the good of the whole — not just good for friends of the leader. Today, special interests have trumped the collective good. Making decisions for the collective good requires strength of character, the communications skills to explain, and a great deal of courage.

Courage remains one of the most important qualities of a leader. The courage of ideas, courage in the face of criticism, the courage to guide and lead. The courage to create a vision for the good of all. The courage to recognize a mistake and accept responsibility — personal — for that mistake.

The second key to bring Canada back to prominence is service. Just a short two months ago, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, queen of Canada, died. It would be impossible to find a better example of service. On her coronation she promised that she would dedicate her life, whether long or short, to the service of all. Over the next 70 years, in good times and in bad, she placed the care of her realm and subjects above all else. She exemplified character and duty and provided us all with an example of dedication to service. She kept her promise. May she rest in peace.

The idea, the concept of service seems to be forgotten in our "me-first" culture. Service to others, to one's country, to humanity must be a noble aspiration. The obligation to give back in gratitude for a life filled with blessings, peace and good fortune should not be innovative. It seems that Canadians have lost the desire to serve and the need to serve their country.

The military — being in the service of one’s country — used to be a most highly regarded profession. Today, I see a military woefully underfunded, undermanned and under-appreciated; a force where uniforms have become a means of personal expression rather than a symbol of collective pride and unity: uniforms are no longer uniform. The idea of serving in our armed forces is getting little traction. Could it be because the moral contract under which our military serve is broken?

Members of the Armed Forces fulfill their side of the moral contract that exists between them and Canadian society — they serve and are ready to serve in dangerous missions at home or abroad to protect our country and project Canadian values. But Canada should also be holding up its end of the contract: providing them with the state-of-the-art tools they need, the best leadership, equipment, education and training to be safe and successful, and looking after them when they become veterans.

In my opinion, we are failing. Because for Canadians generally, the Armed Forces are not important until there is a crisis, and successive governments’ support of the forces reflect that mindset. Our troops who have dedicated their lives to serve this country deserve better.

We are in Veterans Week, commemorating those who exemplified the concept of service by putting their life on the line for us, and honouring those who gave up their tomorrows for our todays. Let's use them as our example to serve.

If more inspiration is required one need not look far: let’s remember the words of two of the finest leaders of our time: Margaret Thatcher believed "There’s no such thing as entitlement unless someone has first met an obligation." And of course, JFK most famously said, "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country."

Soon the festive season will arrive; a season of generosity and benevolence. In the name of service, I challenge us. Offer to volunteer, no matter where: an animal shelter, home for the homeless, seniors or veterans. The most important gift we can give is our time. I challenge us all to donate — instead of selling that surplus coffee maker on Kijiji, let’s donate it to Mission Services or Goodwill or the Salvation Army. I challenge us to be compassionate: give the panhandler enough cash for a warm meal but also ask them their name, wish them well and shake their hand.

I believe we can make Canada better. To find common ground with our neighbour and to unite our country rather than divide it. To apply our leadership and service; to live with compassion, tolerance and patience — but most of all to be proud of Canada and everything we once stood for.

We Canadians live in the greatest country in the world with almost unlimited resources, a tolerant and diverse people, and an educated population who can aspire to the greatest heights. We should be prepared to serve our country and be proud to do so. And our leaders must share this vision. "If not us, who? If not now, when?" Because, as Satchmo has told us, in spite of it all … it is a wonderful world.

I thought the last line was kind of lame, but I understand the sentiment. Take out the reference to Queen Elizabeth and a few others which Americans wouldn't get, and Lt.-Gen. Maisonneuve's address would make a fine campaign speech for... errr... whoever you think could deliver it with a straight face and be believed.

Pope Francis condemns "cancel culture"... but does he walk the talk?

"Every morning before breakfast, Pope Francis says three stupid things. Believe it or not!" It's an old joke, but not without some truth. Yet it's also true that sufferers from alcoholism and dementia occasionally have moments of clarity. [Even President Brandon? Ed.]

One such moment apparently happened to Pope Bergoglio yesterday, during an address to the Vatican diplomatic corps, when Francis warned against attempts to "cancel culture", decrying "one-track thinking" which, he said, attempts to deny or rewrite history according to today’s standards.

Francis told the assembled dips that there was a "crisis of trust in multi-lateral diplomacy" which has led to "agendas increasingly dictated by a mindset that rejects the natural foundations of humanity and the cultural roots that constitute the identity of many peoples."

He didn't actually use the words "globalist" or "one-world", but his statement seems pretty clear and pretty argument, even to those who, like my goodself, have little time for the man who calls himself "pope". 

I have even less time for "Peter the Roman", aka Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the author of the sell-out of Chinese Christians, but even he gets things right now and then. Last month he expressed "concern" over a draft European Union communications manual that suggested not using the term Christmas. The manual, which the Vatican saw as an attempt to cancel Europe's Christian roots, was later withdrawn for revision. 

Francis warned his listeners of "a form of ideological colonization, one that leaves no room for freedom of expression and is now taking the form of the 'cancel culture' invading many circles and public institutions." He used the two words in English in the midst of a long speech in Italian. Pretty heavy stuff. But wait (as Vince Offer used tosay), there's more.

Pope Bergoglio went on to say that the cancel culture controversy is particularly sharp in English-speaking countries, such as the United States and Britain. (He didn't mention Canada, where the cancel culture thrives under Emperor Trudeau II.) Those who subscribe to and promote this culture, he said, risked cancelling identity "under the guise of defending diversity." Yes, he really said that.

In the Excited States of America, there have been conflicts over such acts of iconoclasm -- the physical manifestation of the cancel culture -- as the removal or decapitations of statues of historical figures such as Saint Junipero Serra, Christopher Columbus, and of course General Robert E. Lee. 

In Canada, besides the removal of statues, some loonie lefties have demanded -- and got -- the changing of the names of institutions such as schools and hospitals named after such historical figures as Egerton Ryerson and Sir John Eh Macdonald, saying they played a part in the destruction of indigenous cultures. 

While Pope Bergoglio did not mention any such examples of cancel culture, he did say that any historical situation must be interpreted not by today's standards, but in the context of its times. 

Quite so! But here's the irony, or should I say hypocrisy. While he preaches respect for tradition, he had been for months now campaigning ruthlessly to wipe from the history and culture of the Catholic Church the traditional Latin Mass, which the Council of Trent decreed can never be abrogated!

That was then -- 1570 to be exact -- but this Pope Bergoglio's now. Last July,, Francis moved to stamp out the Mass of All Time, once and for all. He issued a Motu Proprio -- kind of like an Executive Order in the American governmental system --which virtually bans the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass in ordinary parish churches throughout the world. In Traditionis Custodes, Francis attempted to completely reverses the course set by Pope Benedict XVI, just fourteen years ago, in Summorum Pontificum, which specified the circumstances in which priests of the Latin Church could celebrate Mass according to the 1962 edition of the Roman Missal, in the form known as the Tridentine Mass or Traditional Latin Mass, and administer most of the sacraments in the form used before the liturgical "reforms" that followed Vatican II. 

He said at the time that he was reversing Pope Benedict's attempt at "reforming the reform" had become a source of division in the Church, and been exploited by traditional Catholics opposed to the Second Vatican Council and its thoroughly modern liturgy. Am I the only one who sees a cognitive dissonance there?

But wait... Unfortunately,  there's more. A week before Christmas, Francis doubled down on his efforts to quash the old Latin Mass, forbidding the celebration of some sacraments according to the ancient rite. The Vatican repeated the excuse that it was necessary to let go of history and tradition, and to embrace everything that's new, for the sake of promoting diversity and inclusion, yada yada yada. But isn't that exactly the cancel culture he now condemns? 

Pope Bergoglio's crackdown on the Latin Mass has outraged his conservative and traditional Catholics. Many have gone so far to accuse him of heresy and watering down Catholic doctrine with his focus on the environment, migrants and "social justice". Where will it all end? There was a time when heretics were burned at the stake, but that's a part of Church history which we should forget... I suppose.

Nat Hentoff: Why I'm mad at liberal hypocrites

Nat Hentoff? Isn't he dead? Well yes. Since 2017. Before that, Mr Hentoff was an American historian, novelist, jazz and country music critic, and syndicated columnist for United Media. He was a staff writer for the New Yorker, and columnist for The Village Voice from 1958 to 2009. He wrote some fine books, including The First Freedom: The Tumultuous History of Free Speech in America. This article -- even more relevant now than 36 years ago -- appeared in the November 1985 "Mad as Hell Issue" of National Lampoon, on sale here.

Nothing gets me madder than liberals who condemn those right-wingers who attempt to suppress contrary opinions, while those very same liberals do the same thing. 

Item: The National Organization for Women (NOW) passed a resolution two years ago that prevents anyone from being invited to address the annual NOW convention if that person has any point of view that disagrees with any of NOW's policies. If Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum had passed such a resolution, every member of NOW would chortle at those right-wingers showing again how rigid and narrow they were. 

Item: The Progressive, a monthly out of Madison, Wisconsin, is one of the most exuberantly independent of all American political journals. It never caves in to anyone, least of all the government.... Like most irreverent political journals, The Progressive is in chronic need of money. It's been helped, now and then, by the Funding Exchange, a consortium of foundations created by the "rich kids" -- the scions of families with huge, rapaciously acquired fortunes who want to do good in penance.

On the question of abortion, the editors of The Progressive, like the staff, are pro-choice. But the editor believes that anybody who wants to talk to the readers in the advertising columns is entitled to, providing that what he's advocating is legal.

A small radical pro-life group in Kansas City, Missouri, Feminists for Life of America, put a tiny ad in the magazine for three issues running. The ad showed an eight-week foetus and advised pregnant women to think twice or maybe three times before killing him or her. That's all she wrote. The president of Feminists for Life of America, by the way, has been busted both for protesting abortion and for protesting nuclear power plants. And she runs a magazine that is far more to the economic left than those rich kids with their foundations.

Well, the executive director of the Funding Exchange (the rich kids' consortium) cancelled their subscription to The Progressive and also said she and her staff would not help raise any more money for the magazine. To be "progressive" enough for the liberal rich kids, The Progressive would have to keep its pages utterly clean of anything deviating from the pro-abortion orthodoxy.

Liberals -- especially if they're rich -- want to stifle ideas they find offensive, yet go on pretending they're the ones who are truly open to dialogue.

Then there are those librarians who, while they defend the books in their libraries from outside censors, do a pretty mean-spirited censoring job of their own. Some will not order "controversial" books -- a foolproof way of ensuring they won't get into trouble with pressure groups in the community. Others create their own system of banning books that have somehow gotten into the library. 

Consider a library center in upstate New York that provides books to school libraries in Albany, Schenectady, etc. This is the advice the hip, liberal librarians in upstate New York give to their colleagues in the schools. "Place a warning label on biased material: WARNING: IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THESE MATERIALS ARE SEX-STEREOTYPED AND MAY LIMIT YOUR SENSE OF FREEDOM AND CHOICE."

That's a hell of a turn for librarians to take -- labelling books as "bad" for readers. And who determined that those materials are "sex-stereotyped"? By what criteria?" Which novels by Faulkner, Dostoyevsky, and Mark Twain will have to be burned in the schoolyard? And what is this about limiting my sense of freedom and choice? Just who is doing that? Could it be these liberal librarians? 

But let me show you what gets me maddest of all in this ceaseless abundance of liberal hypocrisy. A political science professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz invites to his class one of South Africa's representatives to the United Nations. The professor wants his students to hear and to test the real thing -- a true believer in apartheid. The professor figures they'd learn more from an exchange with someone in the racist South African government than from simply reading about that government.

The South African was never able to say a word to the class. An integrated mob of fifty students made it impossible for the rest of the 150 students in the auditorium to hear the visitor. They so yelled and screamed that the South African had no choice but to leave. The students who had been waiting to ask him some very sharp questions about his government had been silenced just as effectively as had the South African. As the South African left the campus, a student yelled, "Let the story go out that students would not allow a racist to speak on this campus!"

That's the only part of the story that got out. The rest of it was that some American students, like the government of South Africa, do not permit views to be heard that are contrary to their own. But I'm sure the students who prevented the South African from speaking consider themselves to be authentic liberals.

There's a term -- "liberal" -- that used to have some integrity to it. Increasingly, though, liberals lust to censor just as fervently as reactionaries. And just like reactionaries, liberals deny that's what they're doing.

Mr Hentoff was never anyone's idea of a conservative, let alone a right-winger. His rant shows that the hypocrisy of the liberal elites was known, even if not admitted, within their own ranks. MUSIC VIDEO: Aaron Ward song draws ire of liberals

Left-wing music blogger (((Bob Lefsetz))) recently called "Am I the Only One", a No. 1 country music hit sung by Aaron Lewis, "heinous". Give a listen and see if you can figure out why.

 

What's wrong with that?! Could be the patriotism. Do ya think? Maybe the unflattering reference to Bruce Springsteen. Whatever it is, it's got the lefties all riled up. Mr Lefsets -- a Jew who lives in California -- has taken the publisher, Big Machine Label Group, to task for releasing the number. He and his kind seem to think that Mr Ward and his kind should be "cancelled".

Scott Borchetta, CEO of Big Machine, has responded to Mr Lefsetz in an open letter, which says: "Firstly, I believe in the First Amendment. My job has never been to tell my artists what to sing and write about.... Aaron Lewis and I have political disagreements. But there are also things we agree on. I think that's the foundation for the idea of our country. It doesn’t work if we're so divided that we can't reach across the aisle, have a conversation or an argument, and ultimately, shake hands. If we can't do that, and this moment is so divisive, we may never get our country back."

Walt agrees. And to Aaron Ward, Walt sez: You are not the only one! Keep singin'!

VIDEOS: Canucks explain why they celebrate Canada Day

Every year, about this time, Walt, Poor Len [and Ed.! Ed.] extend best wishes to the 1000s of Canucks who read WWW, for a Happy Canada Day! Occasionally... sometime later... we get a comment from a puzzled American reader along the lines of "Huh!? What was that all about? Huh?!" 

This year we're going to pre-empt such expressions of ignorance by posting a nice little video from Brittlestar, the Internet's favourite dad* (*unproven), in which a Canadian explains to his American neighbour exactly what it's all aboot.

So now you know... But this year there are a couple of distractions. First is the fact that, for the first time in history, Canada's team -- the Montréal Canadiens -- are questing, in the heat of summer, to bring the Stanley Cup back to Canada for the first time in 28 years. That's why we're putting up this post a bit early. Go Habs go!

Then there's the controversy over the finding of 100s of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at since-closed residential schools in Canada's western provinces. In displays of virtue-signalling rare even for Canada, SJWs and the loonie left have torn down statues, petitioned to have the names of old lwhite guys removed from schools and other buildings, and even called for Canada Day to be cancelled. Prime Minister Blackie McBlackface has preached that Canada Day 2021 should be not a day of celebration, but of reflection. Hair shirts to be worn and Maple Leaf flags flown upside-down. 

Walt urges Canadians -- and the foreigners, particularly the Chinese, who have been quick to condemn Canada -- to get a grip, and remember all the good things that have been done by the "evil white colonialists" which have benefited Indigenous people, white people, and, yes, the millions of BIPOCs who have come to Canada in spite of the "systemic racism" and are queuing even as we write to bring still more of their kith and kin to this "bastion of white supremacy".

It's a rare country -- I defy you to name even one -- that doesn't have some shameful acts and episodes in its history. Even Americans, the most patriotic people on earth (except for those who hate the USA and everything it stands for) should know that. I don't know -- and don't care to know -- any Canadians who don't think that Canada, for all its faults, is still the best country on earth. Like this guy...

What's wrong with this picture?

Here you see one of Walt's agents in conversation with a statue of Sir John Eh Macdonald (aka Sir John A. Macdonald), the first prime minister of Canada. The statue was erected in 1967 in beautiful downtown Charlottetown PEI, as a Centennial project.

What's wrong with it? It's actually a pretty good statue, in a genre that was popular until recently, showing historical or other figures standing or sitting in poses such that people can have their pictures taken with them. Any objections? Well yes... 

Sir John, very much a product of his times and Scottish origins, was a hard drinker ("Single malt, but make it a double!"), anti-French, and anti-Catholic. He was also determined to civilize the natives, by means such as sending their kids to residential schools where they could be turned into quasi-whites.

Today, Sir John is called a white supremacist by, among others, the Epekwitk Assembly of Councils, a joint forum that includes the councils of both Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation. (For our American readers, "First Nations" is the current politically correct term for the people who used to be called "Indians".) 

In keeping with the current fad for iconoclasm, the Assembly petitioned the Charlottetown city council to "amend" the art installation and "tell the true story of this individual and begin to address the trauma that its presence is continuing to perpetuate." 

The councillors, with the exception of Clr Mike Duffy [That Mike Duffy? The erstwhile Senator? Ed.] voted to leave the statue where it is, albeit with some modifications. The assembly made five suggestions to the city, viz:

Add another figure, such as an Indigenous child or elder. 

Fill in or seal off the empty space on the bench so it can't be used for photo opportunities like this picture.

Install signage so viewers understand "the devastating role that Sir John A. Macdonald played in the Indigenous history of Canada." 

If the artist engaged is not Indigenous, a Mi'kmaw artist should be hired as a consultant.

Complete the work as soon as reasonably possible.

In voting against the resolution, Councillor Duffy referenced a survey last summer that indicated the majority of respondents wanted the statue to remain as is. The other councillors predictably said what the majority of the people want doesn't matter. Such are the times.

VIDEO: Michael Matt on the cancel culture in America AND the Vatican

It's been a while since we reposted a video by Michael Matt, editor the Remnant newspaper. Mr Matt is by way of being one of my favourite commentators on matters political and religious, because he doesn't sugarcoat the truth. And when so many of us are getting discouraged, he remains positive that we can stand up against the forces of the New World Order, and that eventually, with the help of our Lord and His Blessed Mother, we will prevail.

In this video, Mr Matt argues that the cancel culture began with the cancellation of the traditional Catholic religion. Our Lady of Fatima warned Sister Lucia that this would happen. Sister Lucia wrote down the warning and sent it to the Vatican, with instructions that it be revealed in 1960 "because it will be better understood then."

The Vatican sat on the Third Secret and has yet to divulge the full contents of the warning. But it is apparent now... or should be, even to the doubters... that the prophecy of the destruction of the Church and of Western society is progressing, exactly as predicted. 

Mr Matt asks what John Lennon, Pope Paul VI and Margaret Sanger have in common. The answer is that traditional Catholics were at war with them all, long before anyone had ever heard of Cardi B, "Pope" Francis or Bill Gates. The Great Reset is nothing new. What is new is the fact that nobody's laughing at traditional Catholics anymore. Listen and learn.

   

Dear friends, we can defeat the New World Order! Stop being afraid! Start wearing the Brown Scapular -- it will protect you more than any mask -- and praying the Rosary. Even if you're not Catholic, you can still pray to God and His Son for the restoration of Christian civilization. Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat!

Walt wishes Dr Seuss a Belated Happy Birthday

All the fuss about the cancel culture's latest victim, the beloved Dr Seuss, is very timely. March 2nd was the late author's birthday. He would have been 117. He didn't quite make it, but his memory and thoughts live on in the children's books beloved by millions... until now.

Born (((Theodor Seuss Geisel))), Dr Seuss was an American children's author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, and filmmaker. He is known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books, including  many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages by the time of his death in 1991.

His first children's And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street was published in 1937. During World War II, he took a brief hiatus from children's literature to illustrate political cartoons. Naturally those were both anti-Nazi and anti-Japanese. The latter are now being criticized by the PC police for depicting racist stereotypes -- short near-sighted people with snub noses and buck teeth. Of course they were! That was the way we thought our enemies (at the time) were supposed to be portrayed. You can find the same tropes in Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons of the era.

After the war, Dr Seuss returned to writing children's books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), If I Ran the Circus (1956), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). His books during his career, which have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, five feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series.

Now, however, the triumph liberal fascists have cancelled the good doctor, banning [and burning? Ed.] some of his most-loved books (including those titles shown in red above) because (they say) they have "strong racial undertones".

I'm not sure of the difference between an undertone and an overtone, but there you are. The Jewish author and illustrator is a racist, and everything he wrote or drew, even 60, 70 or 80 years ago is suspect. Take down those statues! Erase those murals! Burn those books! Let him be read, spoken of or remembered no more! 

The Loudon County VA school system, which started the current clutching of pearls, has provided "guidance" (read: a diktat) to schools to "not connect Read Across America Day with Dr. Seuss' birthday exclusively."

On Tuesday night, ABC's late-night host Jimmy Kimmel (not known for his conservative views), warned that such acts of cancel culture could propel President Trump to re-election in 2024! "This is how Trump gets reelected, by the way," Mr Kimmel told his audience. "Cancel Dr. Seuss, cancel Abe Lincoln, melt down Mr. Potato Head's private parts and throw them at the Muppets. That is his path to victory the next time around."

HBO Real Time host Bill Maher has similarly warned liberals that cancel culture is "real" and "coming to a neighborhood near you." His actual words, as reported by Breitbart News: "Liberals need a Stand Your Ground law…for cancel culture, so that when the woke mob comes after you for some ridiculous offense, you'll stand your ground, stop apologizing. Because I can’t keep up with who's on the shitlist."

Walt hopes [and prays! Ed.] that the "woke mob" will succeed in devouring themselves. Keep this up (I warn them) and pretty soon people, even moderates or progressives like Messrs Maher and Kimmel, will start laughing. When you get talked about in the late-night monologues, you're doomed!

As for me, I'm going to rummage through the attic and see if I can find any of the Dr Seuss books my parents bought for me when I was knee-high to a cat in a hat. [I know you have Babar and Little Black Sambo! Ed.] I see his books have rocketed to the top 50 Amazon best-sellers; I'm going to put mine on eBay quick, while they can still be sold! I'm sure some senior citizen will snap up Solid, Liquid or Gas!

YouTube "disappears" gun safety video recommended by Walt

 The "cancel culture" really is getting out of hand. YouTube is riding [how about "pushing"? Ed.] the wave of censorship of anything posted on the Internet that could by any stretch of the "woke" imagination be considered offensive, politically incorrect, or even "not woke enough".

Case in point: One of our readers posted a video on YooToob several months ago which was nothing more than a compilation of people having close calls or injuring themselves while using... gasp... firearms. Getting in a little target practice or popping bottles just for fun. The clear message was that if you're careless with an around guns, you'll pay the price. Gun safety, ya see?

The video was up for months and we posted a link to it here on WWW. It got some views, not a lot, and a few likes. And then, a few days ago, it was "vanished"... made to disappear... stuffed into Orwell's memory hole. Why? YT sent our reader this notice.

The funny thing is, if you copy the title and paste it into the YT search window, you'll get lots of "hits" on the subject of gun safety and what happens if you fail to practise same. But not this one. How come? Wonder if it had anything to do with being recommended by Walt...
