Simple solution for problems housing seniors and criminals

As the corona virus continues to sweep across North America [mostly the part south of the 49th parallel. Ed.], it presents governments with problems particular to two groups of citizens who are forced to live in confined quarters where the virus spreads more rapidly, with deadly effect. I speak of senior citizens incarcerated in retirement homes, and criminals living rent-free in prisons where they enjoy benefits (like three squares, internet and TV) which many seniors don't get.

Thanks be, then, to Agent 9, who has forwarded a proposal from "Maxine" [Who she? Ed.] which, if implemented, would kill both birds with one stone. Hm. Maybe not a keen choice o' words. Let's just say our dilemma about what to do with seniors and criminals would be ended, if only our governments would let them... or make them... switch places!

Here ["Maxine" writes] is the way it should be: Let's put the seniors in jail and the criminals in nursing homes. This would correct two things at one:

Seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.
They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and Medical treatment, wheel chairs, etc.
They would receive money instead of having to pay it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they would be helped instantly if they fell or needed assistance.
Bedding would be washed twice a week and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.
A guard would check on them every 20 minutes.

All meals and snacks would be brought to them.
They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling, a pool and education...and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.

Simple clothing – e.g. shoes, slippers, PJs – and legal aid would be free, upon request.
There would be private, secure rooms provided for all, with an outdoor exercise yard complete with gardens.
Each senior would have a PC, TV, phone and radio in their room at no cost.
They would receive daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints and the ACLU would fight for their rights and protection.
The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to, with attorneys available, at no charge to protect the seniors and their families from abuse or neglect.
And they'd be living in a gated community!

As for the criminals:

They would receive cold food.
They would be left alone and unsupervised.
They would receive showers once a week.
They would live in tiny rooms, for which they would have to pay $5000 per month.
They would have no hope of ever getting out.

Sounds like justice to me!

VIDEO: Undefended border with Canada threatens both countries

For many months now, Walt has been reporting on the problems at the World's Longest Undefended Border (TM), particularly at St-Bernard-de-Lacolle QC, where 10s of 1000s of "refugees" from the USA (!) have crossed illegally into the Great No-longer-white North following Canuck Prime Minister Trudeau's infamous tweet in which he offered asylum to anyone, anyone fleeing the horros of Trump's Amerika. Those stories have focused on the problems caused by the lack of border controls on the Canadian side. A particularly egregious example is the true story of Abdullahi Hashi Farah, a follower of the Prophet Mohammed who came to the USA as a refugee only to commit numerous criminal acts. American authorities would like to arrest and (maybe) deport him, so he did the logical thing and refugeed right quick to Canada, where he was arrested and released three times because he was honest enough to declare that he was in trouble in the USA. But the ever-increasing tide of terrorists and criminals runs in both directions, and at least some American lawmakers have started to notice. Last week, the incoming chair of the House Homeland Security Oversight and Management Efficiency Subcommittee, Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA), said that President Trump's focus on the US-Mexico border is leaving unaddressed threats from America's northern border. In an interview with CTV's Richard Madan, Mr Correa said that, because personnel and resources are being diverted to the southern border, the northern border is "totally wide open". Here's the report from CTV News.



"Big swaths of area between Canada and the U.S. -- nobody watching," said Mr Correa. "A lot of negative things go in and out: drug trade, arms trade, things that happen on the northern border that nobody's watching. And it's happening now." He said he had been warned by a US border agent that the Canadians were being complacent, worrying only about the bogus refugee claimants coming into their country from the the USA.

In its "Northern Border Strategy", the Department of Homeland Security said the biggest threat from Canada was the illicit drug trade. It also warned of terror threats "from homegrown violent extremists [Not Islamists, surely! Ed.] in Canada who are not included in the American government's consolidated terrorist watch list and could therefore enter the United States legally at Northern Border ports of entry...without suspicion."

Rep. Correa's accusations aren't new. At a hearing of the same committe back in November of 2017, Rep. John Katko (R-NY) warned that several facilities on the American side of the border, including crossings at Niagara Falls NY and Champlain NY, have been "woefully neglected". A sign at one border crossing shows there are "200 vacancies" for Border Patrol agents at the Canadian border.

For want of adequate manpower to do proper inspections and vetting, Islamic terrorists and criminals of all religions can slip the great undefended border without detection. "We have to recognize the northern border is a threat just like the southern border," he said, "and I would argue that because of lack of attention it is more than a threat."

For Habs fans, laughter is the best medicine

According to Those Who Should Know, Monday last was "Blue Monday", the saddest day of winter, perhaps of the entire year. Crappy weather, holiday bills coming due, no holiday in store until Easter... and, for fans of the Montréal Canadiens (like the young lady at right), yet another disappointing hockey game.

Now that I have your attention... no, this is not the introduction to another moan by Poor Len Canayen. I asked him if he planned on second-guessing Marc Bergevin this week, but he said no, he'd rather shoot him, if he should catch him strolling down The Main.

He went on to say that when the news is grim, the best thing is share a good laugh, and, good fellow that he is, volunteered this supposedly true bit of testimony from a criminal trial.

Counsel: What happened after you had been listening to the music for awhile?
Witness: We got held up.
Counsel: And what happened? Would you give the judge the details of that?
Witness: Well, they told us to get up against the wall, throw our money on the floor, and drop our pants.
Counsel: And what did you do?
Witness: Got against the wall, threw my pants down, and threw our money down.
Counsel: I mean after you got up against the wall and went through -- or followed his directions, what happened?
Witness: Cracked up laughing, because one of the other guys -- guys in on it -- dropped his pants, too.
Counsel: Excuse me? One of the robbers?
Witness: Right.
Counsel: And what happened as he did that?
Witness: They told him, "Not you, stupid!" And he picked up the money.

Should criminal refugees and illegal aliens be identified as such?

Following reports in the Canadian media (and here on WWW!) that a Syrian "refugee" was arrested in Edmonton AB for sexual assaults on six teenaged girls, the usual suspects have started pissing and moaning that it's not fair to identify, as such, "refugees" and asylum-seekers charged with criminal acts.

CBC News quotes one Mohamed Huque, the totally unbiased executive director of the Islamic Family and Social Services Association, as saying that identifying miscreants who claim refugee status will "inflame a segment of our population who already harbour a bias, a discrimination or unfair views towards newcomers." That's his polite way of calling people who don't welcome Muslim invaders -- pardon, "newcomers" -- "racists".

The effect, of course, would be to "embolden" people like Alexandre Bissonnette, now the only suspect in the attack on a mosque in Québec City a couple of weeks ago. See "What REALLY happened at Québec City???", WWW 5/2/17 (includes great video with Gavin McInnes!) Mr Huque said the case is already being used "to incite fear of new immigrants, and has cast a negative light on thousands of refugees."

Obviously the best way to keep stories about the criminality of refugees -- Syrians, Muslims or "other" -- from being used to inflame passions against these poor seekers after freedom and a better life is not to ask them to refrain from abusing the hospitality of the host nations, but... wait for it... to keep such stories from being published. Or, at least, to stop identifying the perps as Muslims or Syrians or refugees or asylum-seekers or anything that would distinguish them from law-abiding white Christians.

Will Canada's government start censoring the lamestream media? Maybe, maybe not. Will the LMS start censoring themselves? They already do! The CBC, guilty guilty guilty of allowing comments on the Québec mosque story (only after the Mohamed became just a "witness") has kept closed the comments box on the West Edmonton Mall story and the terribly offended reaction of Mr Huque and the SJWs.

In the USA, by contrast, the new administration will start publishing weekly lists of crimes committed by illegal aliens. A new Office for Victims of Crimes Committed by Removable Aliens will provide quarterly reports studying the effects of the victimization by criminal aliens present in the United States, and will publish quarterly reports on the immigration status of all prisoners inside the country. So says President Trump's "Executive Order: Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States", issued on 25 January 2017.

During his election campaign, President Trump pointed out that illegal immigrants and "other non-citizens" in US prisons and jails had around 25,000 homicide arrests to their names (United States Government Accountability Office, March 2011). He also referred to the fact that there are at least two million convicted criminal aliens now inside the country, and that since 2013 alone, the Obama Administration had allowed 300,000 criminal aliens to return back into U.S. communities.

The executive order was issued in the interest of enhanced national security. Mr Trump pointed out, during the campaign, that between 9/11 and the end of 2014, at least 380 foreign-born individuals were convicted in terror cases inside the United States. (U.S. Senate Immigration Subcommittee, June 22, 2016).

The measures in the Executive Order should therefore have come as no surprise to anyone who had bothered to read Mr Trump's election promises. Contrary to what is now being asserted by the legal beagles hired by Democratic state governments to challenge the Oder, it is merely forcing the Department of Homeland Security to "ensure the faithful execution of the immigration laws of the United States, including the INA, against all removable aliens, consistent with Article II, Section 3 of the United States Constitution and section 3331 of title 5, United States Code," and "make use of all available systems and resources to ensure the efficient and faithful execution of the immigration laws of the United States."

In other words, President Trump's Executive Order does not in fact create any new laws, and merely insists that existing laws be enforced. Surely that's not asking too much of the courts... is it?

Dumb burglar gets eaten by alligator

Meet Matthew Riggins. Or, I should say, the late Matthew Riggins, deceased at the ripe young age of 22 while fleeing Brevard County (FL) sheriff's deputies.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Mr. Riggins -- already known to police, as they say -- and another man were in Barefoot Bay to commit house burglaries during the night of November 12th-13th.

A sleepless resident called the cops around 2 AM to report that two men, dressed in black, were walking behind houses near Tequesta Drive. The two were spotted minutes later on Royal Palm Boulevard, but fled. With K-9 and helicopter units in hot(ish) pursuit, Mr. Riggins stopped long enough to call his girlfriend to say he was being chased, then dove into a lake just north of Ocean Avenue Way.

Mr. Riggins unwisely disregarded the old diver's maxim "Look before you leap." If he had looked, he might have spotted an 11-foot alligator having a snooze near the shore. Mr. Riggins didn't see the alligator, but the alligator saw him, and did what alligators do.

Mr. Riggins was reported missing by his girlfriend when he failed to come home on November 13th. What was left of him was discovered on the 23rd. He was missing his lower extremities and part of an arm, according to deputies. While recovering the body, the sheriff's dive team were "approached aggressively" by a large gator, which was trapped by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and euthanized. Deputies told the paper, "A forensic examination of the alligator located remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins inside the alligator's stomach."

The man who was with Mr. Riggins on his little escapade has been identified, but is not cooperating with the investigation. If he doesn't talk, the Sheriff has threatened to throw him in the lake.

Vast majority of US young people unfit for military service

Some interesting statistics about the US military appear in this week's Economist. You've heard the old slogan "Our people are our greatest asset"? Turns out finding good "assets" is a big problem for the American services.

In an article headed "Who will fight the next war?", the newsmagazine reveals "a growing disconnect between American society and the armed forces that claim to represent it." No-one wants to join the navy and see the world, or join the army or the air force or the marines.

Even worse, if every young American (aged 17 to 24) were willing to enlist, chances are that less than 30% of them would be found able. Which means that 70% or more would be rejected as ineligible.

Ineligibility varies by state, according to Mission: Readiness, a nonprofit, non-partisan organization led by senior retired military leaders. If your state has an "unfitness rate" -- that's what I'd call it -- of 70% or less, you're not in bad shape... or at least, things could be worse. Unfortunately, only 13 of the Paranoid States of America have a "UR" that low. That leaves, errr, 37 states of whose young people 71% to 78% would be deemed ineligible.

What makes a person ineligible for military service? Here's the Economist's checklist, which Walt presents as a public service, not as a handy guide to staying out of the army (etc).

* Inadequate education - the result of  ever-declining educational standards. Nearly half of those who would otherwise be eligible are disqualified because they dropped out of high school, or, typically (the Economist says) because most young Americans cannot do tricky sums without a calculator.

* Criminal record - a particular problem for young black men, about a third of whom will have been convicted of something or other by the time they're 24.  That accounts, at least in part, for the high numbers in DC and the deep south.

* Obesity - a greater problem for women (especially BBWs) than for men, thus a headache [bellyache? Ed.] for the military as it strives for "gender parity". If you have any doubt about the fattening of America, take a look at Judge Judy sometime.

* Visible tattoos - on hands or faces, that is. Why this should be a problem, I don't know, but Harry-with-the-snake-on-his-face [John Candy character on SCTV. Ed.] will never get to wear a uniform.

If you're 17 to 24 and don't have any of the problems mentioned, Walt suggests you hie yourself off to the local mall, where a recruiter will be lurking [near the donut shop? Ed.] to pounce on you. Because it's so difficult to get anyone to join (the Economist points out), the military offers a seriously fine array of signing bonuses, training programmes and other perqs. Of course you may get killed for no good reason somewhere in the Middle East, but what the hell.

Ontario court jails HIV+ man for unprotected sex

In May of 2011 Walt told you about "You doesn't have to call me Johnson" Aziga, who was convicted of murder by the courts of Ontario for having knowingly infected several women with the HIV/AIDS virus. Two of them died, hence the convictions.

In spite of playing the race card [no surprises there. Ed.] Mr. Aziga was declared a dangerous sexual offender, and is now languishing in a Canadian jail somewhere, at Her Majesty's pleasure, as they say.

Ian Williams is a bit more fortunate. He knows when he's getting out! The 50-year-old Williams was convicted yesterday of having unprotected sex with two women without disclosing his HIV+ status. He was sentenced to six years in the hoosegow -- 3 years for each victim. That's not unreasonable because, see, they didn't die. Yet.

But get this. This week's convictions are not the first for the loathesome Lothario. Williams was previously convicted in 2006 and served a year in jail after two other women reported they were never informed of his HIV positive status when he had unprotected sex with them.

And there's more. A year earlier, his wife died from AIDS. Although his stepdaughter complained to police that her mom had been infected by Williams, he was never charged. This was before the Azinga case set a precedent.

So, as the guys at the track say, Mr. Williams has form. If you were a betting man [unlike Walt. Ed.] you would be tempted to bet on him to repeat, just as soon as he gets out of the gate. After credit for 15 months of pretrial custody, that would be in four years and nine months.

Unless of course the Canadian immigration people are alert enough to deport Mr. William to his native Trinidad. Oh. Didn't I mention that? I knew you'd guess.

Canucks to deport "foreign" criminals. Really!

Earlier today Walt posted an item which poked a little fun at Canada's Minister of Immigration, Jason Kenney, for calling an Alberta minister "a complete and utter asshole". You have to give the man credit, though, for telling it the way he sees it. As he did today when he introduced legislation which give him sweeping powers to deport "foreign" (i.e. non-Canadian) criminals, and to deny entry to "visitors" for pretty much any reason.

The new legislation, if passed unamended, would make it easier for the government to deport refugees, permanent residents and visitors for "serious criminality" -- crimes punishable by six months or more as guests of Her Majesty. Mr. Kenney told a CBC interviewer, "I think you can call them dangerous, you can call them serious, we don't want them in Canada anymore, and that's the bottom line."

He went on to say, "If you are a foreign national and you want the privilege of staying in Canada, don't commit a serious crime.… I don't think that's too much to ask people." Walt is having trouble hearing this afternoon, having been deafened by the sound of applause from coast to coast to coast.

The proposed law would also take away the rather overworked appeals to "humanitarian and compassionate grounds" as factors in appealing a decision that someone is inadmissible to Canada. Mr. Kenney's spokesthingy [Alexis Pavlich again? Ed.] said there are 2747 people with convictions appealing to the Immigration Appeal Division to be able to stay in Canada. According to numerous public opinion polls, most Canadians don't find these criminals so appealing, and would be glad to see the back of them.

Other proposed changes under the Canadian immigration laws include:
* A rule that would deny an appeal to those with foreign convictions for crimes that would carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in Canada.
* A rule that would deny entry to Canada to those with a family member inadmissible for security and human rights reasons -- ex-dictators, for instance -- or organized crime connections, even if that family member isn't travelling with them.
* A five-year inadmissibility period for lying on immigration applications.
* Reporting conditions for those under deportation orders.
* Automatic inadmissibility for non-Canadians and permanent residents for acts of espionage or acts "against Canada's interests".

In last year's federal election campaign platform, the Conservatives promised to streamline deportations of foreign criminals. Here's what their campaign literature said:
"It often takes years to deport even dangerous foreign criminals from Canada. In some cases, foreign criminals and terrorists here have evaded removal for over a decade as they exploit endless appeals and loopholes. Canadians expect that foreign criminals will get due process before being removed, but not an endless abuse of our generosity."

And here's what Mr. Kenney said today. "If you commit a serious crime in Canada, we are going to send you packing as quickly as we can." Wow. How long have Canadians been waiting to hear that?!

The long overdue reform of Canada's frighteningly liberal immigration rules counts as an election promise kept. Wonder how such a promise would play in Peoria.
