So farewell then, Prince Philip
Affectionately (?) dubbed "Phil the Greek" by the British satirical newspaper Private Eye, Prince Philip was actually part of a very large German-British royal family, the Battenbergs, who members sat on the thrones of Russia, Germany, Greece and Great Britain at various times in the 20th century.
Philip, Prince of Greece and Denmark, the son of Princess Alice of Battenberg and grandson of the 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, took the name Mountbatten when he became a naturalised British subject on his marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947.
Philip became the longest-living royal consort in British history, surpassing Queen Caroline, the wife of George III. He spent 74 years supporting his wife in a role that both defined and constricted his life. He died just two months short of his 100th birthday.
Walt didn't know Prince Philip personally, [Really?! Ed.] but was inclined to like him for being politically incorrect, and by all account not suffering fools gladly. His dislike for Crown Prince Charles was fodder for "Heir of Sorrow", a parody of a Mills & Boon bodice-ripper which appeared regularly in Private Eye. One can only imagine what he thought of Prince Harry and the Princess of Woke.
The Prince was known to be "irascible and tough-minded", not afraid to call a spade a spade. He is said to have told a British diplomat posted to Hong Kong not to stay there too long "or you'll become all slitty-eyed like them." And on viewing a rat's nest of wires on a tour of a factory in India, he remarked, "Must have been done by a local electrician."
In the 21st century, saying those kinds of things makes one politically incorrect, and obituaries are being published even as I write describing the late Prince as "racist" and "sexist". I don't think he would care. Here's a photo, posted on WWW years ago, which we think pretty much sums up Prince Philip's view of himself and his place in the overall scheme of things.
What is the reason for the enigmatic smile on his face...and the priceless expressions on the faces of the others, especially Prince Harry? Did Prince Philip fart? Seems like he didn't take himself too seriously, and Walt says, "Good on yer, Phil! RIP."

Prince Charles pens tribute to Cardinal Newman, canonized today
Walt almost never reads L'Ossservatore Romano, the daily newspaper (but not the official publication) of the Holy See, since these days it is little more than a propaganda sheet for the ultra-liberal Jesuits, who, led by Pope Francis, are leading the Roman Catholic Church down the road to heresy and irrelevance. Today, however, the front page of L'Osservatore Romano features "John Henry Newman: The harmony of difference", a lengthy op-ed piece by HRH Charles, Prince of Wales, on the occasion of today's canonization of Cardinal Newman. He calls the canonization "a cause of celebration not merely in the United Kingdom, and not merely for Catholics, but for all who cherish the values by which he was inspired."
John Henry Newman was a 19th-century Anglican priest and scholar who converted to Catholicism at the age of 44 and was later made a cardinal. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. Today he becomes the first Briton in four decades to be declared a saint. Prince Charles held him up as "a great Briton" and "one of the greatest theologians of the nineteenth century [who] applied his intellect to one of the most pressing questions of our era: what should be the relationship of faith to a sceptical, secular age?"
Prince Charles continues: "...first with Anglican theology, and then, after his conversion, Catholic theology, [Saint John Henry Newman] impressed even his opponents with its fearless honesty, its unsparing rigour and its originality of thought. Whatever our own beliefs, and no matter what our own tradition may be, we can only be grateful to Newman for the gifts, rooted in his Catholic faith, which he shared with wider society.
"His faith was truly catholic in that it embraced all aspects of life. It is in that same spirit that we, whether we are Catholics or not, can, in the tradition of the Christian Church throughout the ages, embrace the unique perspective, the particular wisdom and insight, brought to our universal experience by this one individual soul. We can draw inspiration from his writings and his life even as we recognise that, like all human lives, it was inevitably flawed. Newman himself was aware of his failings, such as pride and defensiveness which fell short of his own ideals, but which, ultimately, left him only more grateful for the mercy of God.
"Those of all traditions who seek to define and defend Christianity have found themselves grateful for the way he reconciled faith and reason. Those who seek the divine in what can seem like an increasingly hostile intellectual environment find in him a powerful ally who championed the individual conscience against an overwhelming relativism.
"And perhaps most relevantly of all at this time, when we have witnessed too many grievous assaults by the forces of intolerance on communities and individuals, including many Catholics, because of their beliefs, he is a figure who stood for his convictions despite the disadvantages of belonging to a religion whose adherents were denied full participation in public life. Through the whole process of Catholic emancipation and the restoration of the Catholic Church hierarchy, he was the leader his people, his church and his times needed."
Considering what has happened to the Church he loved in the 20th century, Saint John Henry Newman was blessed to have died in 1890, during the reign of Pope Leo XIII, mere moths before Leo's promulgation of Rerum Novarum, subtitled "On the Conditions of Labor", in which he articulated the Church's response to the social conflict that had risen in the wake of capitalism and industrialization and that had led to the rise of socialism and communism as ideologies.
The saint would surely not recognize today's world, dominated by leftist ideology, nor today's Catholic Church, ditto. Saint John Henry Newman, pray for Holy Mother Church, and pray that God will raise up a courageous leader like yourself, to confound the apostates and heretics who are perverting our Catholic Faith, and set His Church back on the right course. Amen.

Prince Charles blames "foreign Jews" for Middle East turmoil
Charles, Prince of Wales, heir to the throne of the United Kingdom, for many years had a BFF by the name of Laurens van der Post -- Sir Laurens Jan van der Post, CBE, to give him his full name and title. Besides being a close friend to the prince, Sir Larry, who died in 1996, was an Afrikaner author, farmer, war hero, political adviser to British heads of government, educator, journalist, humanitarian, philosopher, explorer, conservationist and godfather to Prince William.
Prince Charles and Sir Laurens used to correspond on matters large and small, sorting out, as only members of the elite can, the problems of the world. Some of their letters have been published, some not. One that came to light just recently was a letter from the prince to the knight in 1986, excerpted in a major article in the Mail Online on Friday.
In the missive, written on 24 November 1986, immediately after an official visit the prince (then 38) made to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar, he expresses his concerns that the exodus of European Jews in the middle of the 20th century "helped to cause great problems." He gives his own view of the conflict with Israel by repeating an Arabist vision of the region. "Also begin to understand their point of view about Israel," he wrote, adding that 40 years after Israel's creation he "never realised they see it as a US colony."
"I now appreciate that Arabs and Jews were all a Semitic people originally and it is the influx of foreign, European Jews (especially from Poland they say) which has helped to cause great problems," he continued. "I know there are so many complex issues, but how can there ever be an end to terrorism unless the causes are eliminated? Surely some U.S. president has to have the courage to stand up and take on the Jewish lobby in the US?" he added, before ending with, "I must be naïve, I suppose! Charles."
Yes, Your Highness. Not just naïve but misinformed. Everyone knows there's no "Jewish lobby" in the USA. If you don't believe me, just ask the New York Times or the Washington Post.

Royal propaganda
Spotted arriving at St. John's airport yesterday were a horse-faced woman with a 30-year-old hairstyle and a big hat, and an even-more-horsefaced man with large bat-like ears.
In other news, HRH Charles, Prince of Wales and his consort the Duchess of Squidgy began their tour of Canada. This is, one hopes, the last of a long string of royal tours inflicted on the Canadian people in an effort to persuade us that the monarchy is worth keeping. According to a recent public opinion poll, we are not convinced.
The focus this time is supposed to be on Canadian history and the military. The Right Charlie is colonel-in-chief of six Canadian regiments. In his speech yesterday he praised Canada for responding "with speed, with magnanimity and with great courage" when called upon, evoking the Somme, Beaumont Hamel, Ypres and Vimy Ridge.
Need I add that he included the obligatory reference to our role in Afghanistan? As "Call me Steve" Harper beamed his approval, Charles said [surely "read", ed.] "I know full well that they are serving with the greatest possible distinction in Afghanistan. In all cases, Canadians are bringing the light of freedom and justice to the darker corners of the world."
Ah yes...freedom and justice. We see so much of that in Afghanistan these days. On the weekend, for instance, the alliteratively-named Abdullah Abdullah, exercised his freedom to withdraw from the Afghan presidential election, thus sparing his supporters possible execution.
So good of the little prince to recognize the value of what we're doing there.
