Walt's pithy comment on yesterday's elections

To borrow a phrase from Pulp Fiction, before the Dimocrats start sucking each other's dicks (or whatever their wimmin have down there), they should take into account the following:

The polls in the Rotten Apple had the "Democratic Socialist" (as in "People's Democratic Socialist Republic") so far ahead that any other result was beyond wishful thinking. As Walt predicted yesterday, real estate agents in Westchester, New Rochelle, and western CT are starting minor conflagrations in their shirt cuffs, rubbing their hands together in glee at the anticipated influx of Jewish buyers.

One of the Jews who is likely packing his bags is Robert Tucker, NYC's Fire Department Commissioner, who, according to the New York Post, handed in his letter of resignation hours after Comrade Mamdani's election.

I checked the map and see that New Jersey and Virginia are both still located on the Eastern Seaboard, a region so blue that Republican candidates rarely stand more than a Chinaman's chance. [That's an old British trope -- nothing racist about it. Ed.]

Northern Virginia is inhabited almost exclusively by Washington DC snivel servants who are smart enoujgh (just barely) to not vote for a candidate who promises to reduce government bloat by firing their sorry asses. "You're fired!" are fightin' words there. And southern Virginia is still southern. Did anybody really think "those people" were going to vote for a black woman who tried to play the race card and the anti-woke card at the same time?

And then there's California, whose people... the ones who haven't fled to Colorado or Idaho... seem to have some sort of collective death wish. Nuff said.

Poor Len Canayen: P.K. has left the building

Poor Len Canayen here, waiting to read what Brendan Kelly, alleged sports jock with the Montreal Gazette, has to say about today's news that "transcendant defenceman" P.K. Subban has been traded by the Nashville Predators to the New Jersey Devils for a bag of pucks and other considerations.

OK, it was actually Dave Stubbs who coined the "transcendant defenceman" phrase, not long before leaving the Gazoo for parts unknown, but it was Kelly who called the Montréal Canadiens' Marc Bergevin crazy and several other nasty things for trading the Giant Skating Ego to Nashville just three seasons ago.

Ever since, Kelly has ranted and whined that the Habs got the worst of the deal, that Shea Weber was washed up (especially when Weber missed the first half of this past season) and that Subban is still the best D-man in the business. After all, Stubbs and Kelly both said, didn't P.K. win the Norris Trophy in 2012-13. Yeah, but that was a short, 42-game season because of a Bettman lockout (more to come?), in which Subban had 11 goals and 27 assists, with a plus-minus of +12. This year he played in 63 games this past season due to a back injury, posting career-low 9-22-31 totals with a +5. Nashville saw he's going downhill and gave him a little shove.

This makes the second time in three years, then, that the "transcendant defenceman" has been deemed surplus to requirements by two of the better teams in the NHL. Now he's with one of the worst. Here's what New Jersey gave up to get him: defencemen Steven Santini (split his season between the Preds and their AHL farm team), Jeremy Davies (played for Northeastern University), a second-round pick at this year's NHL Draft and another second-round pick next year. And NJ has to pick up the remaining three years of Subban's 8-year, $72-million contract. Nashville's not eating any of it.

Said Preds GM David Poile, "We appreciate P.K.'s contribution to the Predators and the Nashville community over the past three seasons, which have seen our organization have unprecedented success. We had to make a business decision. With an aim at strengthening our forward corps this off-season, and the continued strength of our defensive group, we felt it was necessary to clear up salary cap space this way." And don't let the dressing-room door hit you in the ass on your way out.

Further viewing: If you think I'm the only one who's down on Subban (so to speak), check out yesterday's video from The Hockey Guy, starting at 3:55. THG is kind of soft-spoken, but he's making the same point. If you subscribe to THG's channel, which I recommend, tell him Poor Len Canayen sent ya!

VIDEO: The Boss talks about growing up Catholic, before the fall

Michael Matt, editor of the Remnant newspaper, has produced an excellent little video in which The Boss (Bruce Springsteen) talks/sings about what it was like to grow up Catholic in a typical American neighbourhood. Some would say he left the Church. Others, including Mr Matt and Walt, would say the Church left him. In the text on YouTube, Mr Matt writes: This is about the impact of the Revolution of Vatican II, not just on Springsteen but on his entire generation, who watched as the Church in her human element auto-destructed before their eyes. Running time 8:33.

"May God have mercy on all the lost sheep, us included."

Further reading: "The Battle for Rust Belt Catholicism", by Charles F. McElwee. The author points out that, if counted as a denomination, ex-Catholics like Mr Springsteen would make up America's second-largest religious affiliation. His conclusion: "The Catholic Church in America requires an institutional penance, but for penance to arrive, there must first be an acknowledgment of wrongdoing. For years, the Church's leadership has been a reluctant penitent, at best. Instead, it is the faithful who have atoned for the Church, trying, in numerous ways, to maintain (or revive) its sense of community, in the Rust Belt and elsewhere. Whether the bond of trust can be restored is uncertain."

"Baby Trump" blimp headed for New Jersey?

Interesting item on the mojo wire today. Seems the blimp portraying President Trump as a snarling baby that flew over London last week (see "Non-Muslim baby spotted in London", WWW 15/7/18) could soon be on its way to the clear blue skies of the Garden State, now that anti-Trump activists have raised enough money to bring it to the Excited States.

The long-haired, pimply-faced fanatics claim to have raised more than $8000 on GoFundMe.com. That's almost double the amount they said they needed to get the helium balloon to Bedminster NJ, home of the Trump National Golf Club which President Trump (I say that lest they forget) visits regularly. Organizer Didier Jiminez-Castro (no relation?) said he hoped the balloon would spur enthusiasm for Democratic candidates in November’s mid-term elections.

"Baby Trump will give that punch, that energy that we need for the midterms," said Senor Jiminez Castro. "It’s going to get people out of the house." But not, Walt thinks, out of the country.

Sadly for the anti-Trumpers, the money will be wasted, since Mr Trump will probably not see the blimp. The Federal Aviation Administration places flight restrictions on airspace over Bedminster whenever he visits!

VIDEO: Mess with Price and you'll pay the price!

Poor Len Canayen here, still excited after watching last night's game between the Montréal Canadiens and the Devils of New Jersey. It was a very entertaining affair, with les Glorieux emerging victorious, 5-2. The highlight, though, occurred near the end of the first period, when the best goaltender in the world, Carey Price, lost his customary cool after having been run into for the second time. Here's the video.

Those who think Price overreacted to having his feet knocked out from under him, from behind, by the Devils' Kyle Palmieri should keep in mind that in May of 2014, when the Habs were well into a playoff run which could have netted them their first Stanley Cup since 1993, New York Rangers' Chris Kreider took a run at Price in exactly the same way, crashing him into the goalpost and putting him out of the game and out of the Eastern Conference finals, which the Habs then lost. See "Montreal Canadiens’ goalie Carey Price out of Eastern Final with injury", Toronto Star, 19/5/14.

This kind of deliberate (or at least negligent) crease-crashing has got to stop! Price got a double minor penalty for roughing. IMHO he should have got a medal!

"Worst blizzard in the history of New York City" - LMAO

New York Mayor Warren Wilhelm Jr. -- that's DeBlasio's real name -- warned of the "historic snowfall" that was about to descend on his city. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie -- aka Christie the Clown -- warned people to stay off the roads lest they be trapped in their cars. States of emergency were declared in advance of the impending "Snowmageddon" -- a word which was used sparingly, but used all the same. And in Rome, the Pope was adding a couple of references to his encyclical on the theologically fraught question of global warming.

And then... ... nothing happened! Or at least, nothing that a Canadian suburbanite couldn't handle with shovel. But New York and New Jersey aren't in Canada. [Tanks God for dat! Poor Len.] They are in the Paranoid States of America, where there is no such thing as a minor inconvenience. Everything that happens in America -- especially New York -- is the biggest and best... or worst... as the case may be.

Walt recommends that Messrs DeBlasio and Christie take a trip today -- now that the airports are open again! -- to someplace like Fargo, where the real snow is and where the real people are. That's the real America!

Note from Ed.: Even with the intervention of Poor Len, this is a bit short. So let's fill some space with a little-known fact, which has nothing to do with blizzards or effete Easterners. The decibel was named for the famous British-American-Canadian (depending on who you ask) inventor, Sir Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone. [Really? I thought Don Ameche invented the telephone. Walt]
