Things you see on the Internet: "Trust, but verify!"

Agent 6 has interrupted his travels to send us these spectacular pictures of Brazilian people tempting fate by hanging from a famous rock. These images have not been photo-shopped. They are real pictures.

Incredibly brave people. Right? But the truth is... wait for it... the rock is only a few feet above the ground. All that is required is the proper perspective!

Now you know that fake news looks like! And why you shouldn't believe everything you see in pictures. Remember this anytime you watch news on TV or read it on the Internet. Sometimes, the truth is a lot different than what it appears. It all depends on perspective. Remember too, Walt always presents the truth... as we see it!

VIDEO: 8 truths in 30 seconds - LA Rep. candidate dooms campaign?

Q. How do you know when a politician is lying? A. When his mouth is open...
It's an old joke, and all too true 99% of a time. But every now and then someone running for office has the gonads to place himself in the line of fire by getting up on his hind feet and telling the truth, simply and forcefully.

That's what Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) did yesterday, when his campaign released a 3-second TV ad asserting (among other things) that there are only two genders. "As a doctor", he says, he should know! Check this out.

Telling that stone truth puts Dr Abrahams at odds with the prevailing political orthodoxy, and with Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, who, three years ago, issued an executive order that mandated state contractors accommodate employees who identify a gender other than their biological sex. If contractors didn't comply with Gov. Edwards' diktat, vital infrastructure projects could have been delayed. LA Attorney General Jeff Landry challenged the legality of the executive order and said that the Gov. Edwards wasted valuable taxpayer dollars by fighting the order in court. The Louisiana Supreme Court agreed.

As to the other truths...
"Life begins at conception." Congressman Abraham, a member of the pro-life caucus, has fought in Congress for a government-wide ban on funding abortion and health plans that cover abortion.
"Government is too big." Louisiana government spending has increased by $7 billion under Gov. Edwards, while the state has one of the worst economies in the country. The state also has the second-highest sales tax rate in the country and the highest corporate income tax in the South. Yet Louisiana is the only state in the union to lose jobs in the under the Trump economy.
"Our car insurance is too expensive." Louisiana has the second-highest car insurance rates in the country -- 59% percent more for than rates paid by the average American.
"President Trump is doing a great job." Who could argue with that?! Mr Abraham was one of the first members of the Louisiana congressional delegation to endorse then-candidate Donald Trump. FiveThirtyEight’s "Trump score" calls Rep. Abraham one of the President's strongest supporters.
"The Second Amendment is self-explanatory." Congressman Abraham, a veteran and strong supporter of the Second Amendment, has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association (NRA). `nuff said.

Walt also endorses Congressman Abraham and wishes him good luck. And congratulations for telling 8 truths in 30 seconds!

Further viewing: Congressman Abraham talks about his campaign on KTAL NBC 6, 17/4/19. Good stuff about Medicaid, tort reform, and the cost of education. "We don't have a revenue problem in Lousiana. We have a leadership problem!"

Socrates' Test of Three

As we consider the meaning of the events of the past year, and contemplate the year to come, the week before New Year's is a good time to be philosophical. In that spirit, Agent 17 sends us a little story about the Socratic Test of Three.

The problem with information is that you never know what will turn out to be important. Take Socrates for example. In ancient Greece, Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom, for his rational and reasoned view of the world. One day the great philosopher was wandering in contemplation when he was approached by an excited admirer. "Socrates! Socrates!", the man began. "There's something you should know about one of your students..."

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three."
"Test of Three?"
"That's correct," Socrates confirmed. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say."

"The first test is Truth. Are you absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man replied reluctantly. "Actually I just heard about it from another guy."
"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if the information is true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?"
"Well, no," the man said sheepishly. "Not really."
"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"
The man shrugged, embarrassed. "I thought you'd want to know..."
Socrates continued, "Okay. Then let me ask you this: Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"
The man shrugged again, "It depends, I suppose. I don't know."

"So," concluded Socrates, "you want to tell me something that you don't know is true, it's certainly not good information and may in fact be harmful to my student and friend, AND you don't know if it will even be useful to me. Why tell it to me at all? Why not just keep it to yourself until you are sure?"
The man nodded, ashamed at his impulsiveness. "You are wise, Socrates. I'm sorry to have bothered you."

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.
It's also why Socrates never found out Plato was banging his wife.

"Top Ten Self-Evident Life Truths"

In the middle of Gullible's Travels (see yesterday's book review), author Cash Peters has inserted the following.

Marching briskly along Massachusetts Avenue [one] cool, damp October evening, and farting to the beat of my own footsteps (it's a gift!), I began compiling in my head a list of what I'll call Self-Evident Life Truths.

These are lessons learned over a lifetime. Lessons that, given half a chance, I would hand to today's youth on a plate, thereby saving them the bother of finding this crap out for themselves.

The list is quite long. Spoiler: there are more than ten! Walt presents just three.

1. People who drink and smoke are more interesting than those who don't.

6. Some folks enjoy conflict. They love to fight and are constantly engaged in battles. That way, they don't have to focus on how screwed up they are or how lousy their life is. This applies to nations too.

24. There is a God. It may not seem so on occasions, but that's only because He's busy yakking to Victoria the schizophrenic. Otherwise, He's on the case; never doubt it.

To share with you the entire list would require more space than Ed. allows me. So here's what we'll do. If you'd like to read the whole thing, I'll send it to you in an e-mail. Just click here to send me a note and I'll reply immediately.

Note from Ed.: Here's another Life Truth. Not everyone who promises to do something right away will actually do so. But Walt is not an auto mechanic, so give it a shot.
