Happy Canada Day? Errr, maybe not

Well, it's Canada Day again, the 157th anniversay of Confederation, which brought together four British colonies -- more were added later -- into what was called the Dominion of Canada. Now Canada is not a "dominion", according to Prime Minister Blackie McBlackface, but a "post-national state" which "old stock" (read: of European descent) Canadians have started to call "Canuckistan".

According to a poll published last week, 70% of Canadians aren't happy with the Canada that the Trudeaus, père et fils, have reshaped according to their vision. The poll, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Global News between the 12th and 14th of June, revealed that 70% agree with Cuckservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre that Canada is broken! 

When asked "Compared to five years ago, are you more or less likely to do the following?", they responded:

Just over one-third (35%) say they are less likely to feel proud to be Canadian, while only 16% say they are more likely. Roughly three in ten say they are less likely to attend a Canada Day event or display a Canadian flag around the holiday. Similar proportions say they are more (27%) and less (27%) likely to speak positively about Canada to those not from Canada, but negative sentiment is on the rise. On Indigenous issues specifically, 33% say they're more likely to learn about Indigenous history compared to five years ago, but even this figure is waning, down six points since last year.

Compared to June 2023, the portion of Canadians who say they are less likely now to do any of these things has grown, especially when it comes to pride in being Canadian and speaking positively about Canada, while the portions of those more likely has fallen. When asked if they agree or disagree with Pierre Poilievre that Canada is “broken,” 70% say they agree – with 32% saying they strongly agree.

What is the source of this increasing dissatisfaction? Ipsos didn't ask that, but other polls suggest that true Canadian hosers are fed up with DEI, wokeism in general, and, first and foremost, the person named in this year's best-selling Canada Day flag.

C'est aujourd'hui la Fête nationale du Québec (known originally and still as la Fête Saint-Jean-Baptiste / Saint-John-the-Baptist Day). Throughout la Belle Province and in many communities across Canada, "Canadiens de souche" (old stock francophone Canadians) gather to mark the feast day of the patron of French Canada, and celebrate francophone culture with public events including concerts, parades, and firework displays. Families and neighbourhoods also get together to hold their own smaller celebrations -- picnics, bonfires and barbecues -- for la Saint-Jean.

Peel Region (Canada) cops start anti-LGBT emergency response unit

The Regional Municipality of Peel, next urban sprawl west of Toronto, Canada, is a seriously screwed-up region. It consists of the Town of Caledon, which is more or less normal since it is mostly populated by rich white folks who own horses and vote for mildly conservative parties. The flatlands south of the Caledon Hills are divided into two large (for Canada) cities, Brampton and Mississauga.

The City of Brampton has been the subject of several posts on WWW. The population is about 40% black, 40% brown (Sikhs and other Indians) and maybe 20% who have not yet joined the legions of "white flees" who have moved further away from the Wormy Apple. The black folks don't vote since they're too busy appearing in court. The white folks don't vote because it won't make any difference. Why? Because the "south Asian community" -- Indians, Pakistanis, and a few Bengalis -- can be counted on to vote Liberal, resulting in the election of Sikh people like Raj Grewal, MP, mentioned here before.

The City of Mississauga is a little more diverse. There is a large South Asian community -- 95% Sikhs -- in what used to be called Malton, around YYZ (Pearson International Airport) where they are employed as baggage-wallahs and security guards. There is a vibrant Chinese community south of the 403 between Mavis and Creditview Roads. And there are some enclaves of well-to-do white people along the shore of Lake Ontario, in areas still known to oldies as Port Credit, Lorne Park and Clarkson. So, a mixed bag.

The diversity which Canuck Prime Minister Just In Trudeau claims makes Canuckistan strong also makes Brampton and (to a lesser extent) Mississauga, ghettos. Don't take Walt's word for it. Check out "Saying the unsayable about the unspeakable in Brampton, Canada" (WWW 25/4/14) and "Brampton a ghetto? How can they say that?" (WWW 13/6/16). It's all part of "The irreversible browning of Canada", (WWW 26/10/17).

Not all "old stock Canadians" are happy about that. Consequently, there's now a certain amount of what the Liberals call "hate crime", i.e. speaking the truth about the propensity of certain racial and ethnic groups to do things like hold up convenience stores or kill their women for the sake of "honour". M-103!

But the "victims of hate crime" are not just non-Christians of colour. Oh no. There's a lot of "hate" against the LGBTQ2Setc community. That group has grown exponentially since homosexuality became fashionable, not just in the Catholic Church but in society generally, thanks to the constant glorification of the gay "lifestyle" by the pro-queer government and media. Walt is shocked to learn that some Canadians, even in Brampton and Mississauga, think that there is something wrong ["queer"? Ed.] with the LGBTQ types, and that "gender fluidity" should not be promoted in schools. What's worse, these "homophobes" sometimes speak out publicly, going so far as to hold demonstrations in favour of old-fashioned Christian morality. The horror, the horror!!!

Any mention of the social and personal problems which go along with the gay lifestyle is now verboten, of course, because to speak (or even think) against "diversity" -- including "gender diversity" -- is hate crime. And you'd better believe, dear Canadian readers, that "haters" will be tracked down, prosecuted and punished! Unless, of course, they're preaching hate aqgainst straight white Christians. That's OK.

So keen are the minions of the law -- the Peel Regional Police -- on finding and arresting the "haters" that they have formed a special squad -- the Diversity Relations unit -- to respond immediately, in numbers and with force, to occurrences such as the shouting of the N-word outside a strip club (of which Brampton and Mississauga have many). They even have their own emergency vehicles, appropriately painted in rainbow stripes. I kid you not. Here's the photographic evidence.

It is to be noted that, through a quirk of history, the PRP does not police the mostly-white Town of Caledon, only the mostly-coloured Cities of Brampton and Mississauga. So if you're a resident of Caledon, you can speak your mouth with less fear than the million-plus to the south of you. If you live in the ghettos of Brampton and Mississauga, you can feel assured... and quietly proud... that the Peel Region Police Diversity Relations team has your back, or your backside, as the case may be.

Québec enacts law banning face coverings in public places

If they live in Québec, these women might well start looking over their shoulders, keeping their eyes (only) open for the long arm of the law, for starting soon they will be in violation of a law requiring Québec people who give or receive any public service to uncover their faces.

Bill 62, which Walt thinks might well be called the Open Face Law, was passed by the National Assembly (legislature) last week. It applies to all provincial ministries, school boards, universities, public health care institutions, subsidized day care centres, municipalities, and public transit authorities.

Also covered (or uncovered, if you'll forgive the pun) are doctors, dentists and midwives. So if you're in a doctor's office, no matter whether you're the doctor or the patient, take off that veil! Walt wonders if there's an exception for surgical masks. There should be no problem for dental patients, though. How could you get your teeth cleaned with your face covered? [I've always wondered about that too. Maybe Muslim women don't go to the dentist? Ed.]

Bill 62 details under what circumstances employers and schools should refuse requests for time off for religious reasons. It would also bar taxpayer-subsidized daycares from teaching children specific religious beliefs.

The fundamental principle of Bill 62 is the duty of religious neutrality which is considered necessary in a society which is determined to be an exemplar of secular humanism. This is a 180-degree turn from the Québec of old, of the days before the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s, when the teachings of the (pre-Vatican II) Church established the norms of morality and propriety for Canada's most Catholic province.

The secular values of the New Québec were set out back in 2013 in the Charter of Québec Values proposed by the Parti Québecois, which was then in power, in response to the anger of old stock Québecois over religious accommodation -- the PC notion that Canadians should had to adapt to the social and religious customs of non-Christian (read: Muslim) immigrants. The PQ was defeated in the next provincial election, but in 2015 similar legislation was introduced by the new Liberal government as Bill 62.

Although Bill 62 doesn't mention the niqab or burqa specifically, Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée said that, since the law will apply to municipalities, metropolitan communities and public transit organizations. anyone who rides a bus or the Métro (subway) must be unveiled. Mme Vallée told CBC Montreal's Daybreak yesterday that a woman who normally wears a burqa or niqab would have to show her face for the duration of her ride, "as long as the service is being rendered."

Beyond the face-covering ban, the Bill 62 sets out broad limits for all requests for religious accommodation. It says a request has to be "serious", respect the right to equality between men and women and "the right of every person to be treated without discrimination." Opposition to the legislation has come chiefly from the members of one religious group. Walt will leave you to guess which religion that is. Hint: It's one of the three Abrahamic religions... the newest one of the three... Geddit?
