Ed. was just putting the finishing touches on the piece about the Islamic terrorist attack in Edmonton, Canada (see below) when the mojo wire spat out a bulletin about a stabbing at the central train station in Marseille, in southern France. Two people are confirmed dead after what a source told Reuters was a "terrorist attack". Witnesses said they heard the attacker yell "Allahu akbar!" before being shot dead by soldiers of the French army.

Catholic historian Hilaire Belloc foresaw Islamic jihad in 1938
On New Year's Eve, while Muslim "refugees" were assaulting and robbing women in Cologne and other European cities (see "Trump warns Germans after asylum-seekers' sex and crime spree"), Breitbart published an article by Thomas Williams, Ph.D., headed "Hilaire Belloc in 1938: Islam ‘the Most Formidable and Persistent Enemy’ of Western Civilization". It's timely reading precisely because of the events of that night.
Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (1870-1953) was known as an orator, poet, sailor, satirist, man of letters, soldier, political activist, historian and one of the most prolific writers in England during the early 20th century. He was President of the Oxford Union, and later a Member of the British Parliament from 1906 to 1910.
Dr. Belloc wrote on a vast range of subjects, from warfare to poetry to history to current affairs. He ranks among the "Big Four" of Edwardian Letters, along with the free-thinker H. G. Wells, the atheist George Bernard Shaw, and the traditional Catholic G. K. Chesterton. His Catholic faith had a strong impact on his works, and his vision into the heart of Catholic history is incisive and succinct. The year just past has proven him a great prophet, unheeded in his day and desperately needed now, as his vision of the future is played out in Europe and America.
That vision is contained in Dr. Belloc's 1938 book The Great Heresies, in which he saw almost a century ahead into the current day. He was convinced that Europe and America had forgotten about Islam to their own peril, and were unaware that the Muslim religion could rise again and pose perhaps the greatest threat of any enemy of the Western World. "It has always seemed to me possible, and even probable," he wrote in 1938, "that there would be a resurrection of Islam and that our sons or our grandsons would see the renewal of that tremendous struggle between the Christian culture and what has been for more than a thousand years its greatest opponent."
In the chapter titled "The Great and Enduring Heresy of Mohammed", he predicted the re-emergence of Islam as a global force and unparalleled foe of Christian civilization. "Less than a hundred years before the American War of Independence," he wrote, "a Mohammedan army was threatening to overrun and destroy Christian civilization." Thus there was no reason to think that Islam would not return to its former power, to become once again "the most formidable and persistent enemy which our civilization has had... as large a menace in the future as it has been in the past."
Dr. Belloc saw in his own time what is even more true nearly a century later, that European Christianity had sold out to "temporal things". He wrote, "There is no reason whatever why [Islam] should not learn its new lesson and become our equal in all those temporal things which now alone give us our superiority over it -- whereas in Faith we have fallen inferior to it."
And that's exactly what has happened. We have turned our backs on the Christian Faith that made the Western world strong. Meanwhile, the Muslims grow ever stronger, ever more fanatic, in their false and heretical religion. And, following the commands of Mohammed and the Holy Qu'ran, they are waging jihad -- holy war -- in our own lands.
They do not send whole armies against us, as they did centuries ago. Instead, they infiltrate our countries disguised as refugees and asylum-seekers, to wreak havoc, take over our cities and destroy us and our way of life. And what do we do? Welcome them with open arms! Surely it's time we heeded the warnings given to us by Hilaire Belloc, Enoch Powell, Charles de Gaulle and others who God blessed with the ability to look into the future.

Paris attacks: the exhausted reply of an exhausted Church
I just saw an insightful analysis by Christopher Ferrara on the tepid and politically correct response of Pope Francis to the Islamic terrorists' attacks in Paris. "Confronted with the mass murder and mayhem conducted by agents of the Islamic State in the very heart of the very nation known as 'the eldest daughter of the Church'", he writes "Pope Francis professed perplexity as his initial reaction: 'I am moved and I am saddened. I do not understand, these things [sic] hard to understand.'"
Mr. Ferrara goes on to ask why it should be hard to understand "that this false religion, the perpetual enemy of Christ and His Church, has spawned modern Muslim warriors who vow to conquer Europe and ultimately Rome itself even if they have to blow themselves up to further their cause?
"Islam is a religion invented by a man of violence, whose influence has expanded exclusively by violence. To this day Islam is maintained by violence even in 'moderate' Islamic states, where the penalty for conversion to Christianity is death."

Islam: a historical perspective
Note from Ed.: Walt, selfish curmudgeon that he is, has never before turned over this space to anyone else. However, Agent 12 had his comments on Islam, 9/11 and the killing of Osama bin Laden rejected by a small daily paper near the border. We think these things need to be said. So here's a slightly abbreviated version of a column the lamestream press wouldn't print.
This year will see the tenth anniversary of 9/11. As the day draws closer, chronicles of the war on terror, interviews with survivors and where-were-you-when stories will become a veritable media tsunami. I fear that what will be missing from all this is any thoughtful historical perspective.
To consider the brutal attacks of 9/11 as the isolated evil of a few fanatics is to deny history -- a history that stretches back far beyond the first attempt on the Twin Towers in the 1990s, to the seventh century, to the birth of Islam.
What happened nearly a decade ago was just part of a continuum. We continue to be told that Islam is a "religion of peace" but that's just not so. It spread by force through the Middle East as non-Muslims were given the "choice" of conversion or death. It was the wrongly maligned Crusades that finally brought Islam to heel, but only for a time.
There was a Muslim resurgence in the 16th and 17th centuries, and then another respite for Christendom. In both these cycles, it was Christian fervour and blood that ultimately prevented Islam from taking total control of Europe.
Yet, what has been the reaction since 9/11? We declared war on terror, but instead of acknowledging that what's going on is indeed a religious war, our governments reacted by becoming rampantly secular.
President Barack Obama has declared that the United States is not a Christian country, although at least 75 per cent of Americans identify themselves as such. The percentage is similar in Canada.
Obama heads the pack of Western leaders who believe that by rejecting the Christianity on which our society was established, Islam will be appeased and there will be no bloodshed in the name of Allah. This is based on the naive belief that somehow an Islamic culture and a secular one can coexist peacefully.
For evidence to the contrary, one need only look to the predominantly Islamic countries, where Christians are routinely persecuted and Muslims who convert are imprisoned or killed. Here's a chilling statistic. Since 9/11 there have been 17,193 deadly terror attacks, according to the well-documented website Islam: The Religion of Peace. The site says that in the week ending May 6 there were 37 jihadist attacks resulting in 161 deaths and 302 people critically injured.
The last wave of Islam to wash over Western culture reached its high water mark in the 17th century. Armies from the Ottoman Empire had overrun much of Europe, advancing as far as the gates of Vienna. The victory won by a coalition of Christian armies led by Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland, sent Islam back to retool for its next attempt, which began in the 20th century.
The big difference this time around is that the force of Christianity has been severely weakened. As the brilliant Catholic writer Hilaire Belloc warned in The Great Heresies (1936): Those who direct us and from whom the tone of our policy is taken have no major spiritual interest.... Islam has not suffered this spiritual decline and [in this] lies our peril.
And the date of that battle at Vienna? September 11, 1683. Just a coincidence?
