From the Islamic Republic of Pakistan comes news of what local police are calling an "honour crime" -- the "revenge rape" of a 16-year-old girl in retribution for her brother's rape of another girl. (Reuters) - Pakistani police have arrested 25 members of an informal village council accused of ordering the rape of a 16-year-old girl as revenge for her brother's alleged sexual assault of another girl. But wait (as Vince Offer used to say), there's more. The first assailant's father is a brother of the second assailant's grandfather. So that's two rapes in two days, all in one extended family.
The rapes took place in a small village called Muzaffarabad, a suburb of the city of Multan, in Punjab province. Ahsan Younus, chief of Multan's police department, told the meeja, "They are victims and accused at the same time.... It’s barbaric."
As indeed it is. But the case is far from shocking. Such honour crimes still take place in some parts of Pakistan and India, and are not unknown in the USA and Canada, where "refugees" and other immigrants have brought the barbaric customs and practices of their native lands -- female genital mutilation, for example -- with them.
Earlier this month, a local council, known in local languages as a panchayat or jirga, was called after a family accused a 16-year-old boy of raping a 13-year-old neighbour. The council ruled that the sister of the boy should be handed over to the victim's brother to be raped. An eye for an eye, or in this case... well, never mind. The girl was duly handed over by her family, and the punishment was carried out on July 17th.
The case came to light a couple of days later, when both families filed criminal charges with police, each accusing the other family's son of rape. Questioning both sides in the cases soon revealed the role of the informal village council, according to Chief Younus. "All the village council elders who ordered the revenge rape have been arrested," he said. "A total of 29 people were involved in this ghastly crime, and we have 25 of them in our custody." Both the victims and their mothers have been sent to a women's protection center, he added, without explaining what would happen when the women eventually return to their village.

Before we get into this...
Q1. What do they call it when you have your tonsils removed?
A1. A tonsillectomy.
Q2. What do they call it when you have your appendix removed?
A2. An appendectomy.
Q3. What do they call it when a growth is removed from the top of your head?
A3. A haircut!
Now then, seriously...
Question: What do they call it when a woman undergoes cosmetic surgery to alter her labia minora (inner labia) and the labia majora (outer labia), the folds of skin surrounding her vulva?
Answer: A labiaplasty (aka labioplasty or labial reduction).
Rather than show the real thing, we have modestly used a visual metaphor to show the result of a successful labial reduction, which is to change the look of the patient's external genitalia from that on the left to that on the right.
The question Walt cannot answer is why a woman would do this. In the past five to ten years, the greatest growth in the specialty cosmetic field has been labiaplasty. It's become trendy among young white women, especially teens.
The procedure [Isn't that the word the wimmin use for "abortion"? Ed.] has some roots as a medically necessary operation. It is sometimes done to help women who experience pain because of friction caused by unusually large labia. But a significant number of those having it done have no underlying condition. Apparently they wish to alter the appearance of their genitals because they believe they do not fall within a normal range, or... just to look better.
Cosmetic surgeons argue labiaplasty can help women build confidence and resolve problems with sexual dysfunction. Critics say the desire to get labia changed is driven by unattainable standards set by the prolific porn industry [Aha! Ed.] and there is little evidence to support any claims the procedures provide women with any benefit.
Seems to me that some interesting cultural questions underlie this debate. There has been much controversy of late over genital mutilation. See, for example, "MI doctor charged with female genital mutilation; guess which religion?", WWW 17/4/17. Genital mutilation, aka "female circumcision", is a "barbaric cultural practice" (the "progressives" tell us) prevalent in the Muslim parts of Africa. In its extreme forms it can involve clitoridectomy [when they remove the woman's... never mind... Ed.]. But in less severe forms it's the trimming of the labia -- a labiaplasty.
Innocent question: If it's OK for insecure or simply vain white Western women to have labiaplasties, why is it wrong for religious brown/black Muslim women to their genitals "mutilated"? Just askin'....

MI doctor charged with female genital mutilation; guess which religion?
Should be an interesting afternoon in beautiful downtown Detroit. [Eh??? Ed.] Protesters with "NOCIRC of Michigan" plan to gather about noon EDT outside the US District Courthouse to raise awareness of the barbaric "cultural" -- read "Muslim" -- practice of female circumcision, more accurately described as female genital mutilation or "FGM".
"The genitals of both girls AND boys needs [sic] to be protected from the harm of any genital cutting practice," said (((Norm Cohen))), executive director of NOCIRC of Michigan. "Michigan has one of the highest rates of circumcision in the world. This unnecessary custom violates a child's right to bodily integrity and normal functions."
The occasion for the protest is the bail hearing, scheduled for 1300 today, for Jumana Nagarwala, M.D., a Detroit doctor with performing genital mutilation on two 7-year-old girls, in what is believed to be the first case brought under a law prohibiting the procedure. Dr Nagarwala, an emergency room physician at Henry Ford Hospital, is alleged to have performed the procedures at an unnamed medical clinic in the Detroit suburb of Livonia.
"Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls," said acting US Attorney Daniel Lemisch. "The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law."
Female genital mutilation typically involves the partial or total removal of the clitoris and is barred by numerous international treaties. The practice is common in several African countries, including Somalia, Sudan and Egypt, where it is often a cultural or religious tradition. What do these countries have in common? They are all Muslim countries, run according to strict interpretations of Islamic law. (Notice that Ethiopia, a predominantly Christian country surrounded by the others, is not in the list.)
Why does Michigan have one of the highest rates of FGM in the world? Because that state, and the greater Detroit area in particular, is the new home of hundreds of thousands of Muslim immigrants, "refugees" and asylum-seekers, who have brought their barbaric cultural practices with them. Yet it has taken two decades for the Justice Department to launch this first criminal prosecution under a law against such practices enacted in 1996!
