So, farewell then to The Don [not to be confused with The Donald! Ed.], the mascot of University of San Francisco sports teams for nearly a century.
What's wrong which The Don? To understand why the pencil-mouistached, green-hat-wearing mscot has gone the way of Chief Wahoo and the Fighting Irishman, you have to know that USF is a privately-owned Jesuit school. So? For the last two decades, the leading religious figure and apostle of wokeism was none other than Jorge Bergoglio, the Jesuit who called himself Pope Francis. See the connection? But you don't have to take Walt's word for it. Hear USF President Salvador Aceves, who put the institution’s new mascot choice -- a wolf [Seriously? Ed.] in context thus:"With new leadership at USF and in Dons Athletics, we believe the time is right to revitalize our image and embrace a new mascot, one that is known for its intelligence, endurance and ability to work cooperatively in its pack."
Ummm, but he didn't say what was wrong with the Don. The New York Post revealed the real reason for The Don's dethronement. Seems the usual gang of snowflakes, Karens and loony leftists gave "upsetting colonial history" as their reason for the push to end the association. They got barely 400 gullible students to sign a petition demanding the change, the modern "Catholic" school governors caved, and so The Don is gone.
Footnote: The Don's origins go all the way back to 1932 -- some four centuries after the Spanish colonial era -- to Don Francisco de Haro, the first mayor of Yerba Buena, which ultimately became San Francisco. Not exactly your evil conquistador type.
